Homebrew Competitions / Re: NHC Certificates
« on: August 05, 2013, 08:09:36 AM »
Certificates?  We got those after the first round, didn't we?

I got my Final Round scoresheets today, FWIW.

I didn't get certificates after the first round. but I DID get 6 CERTFICATES!

**EDIT TO ADD ACTUAL INFO **
They were downloadable from the competition site for first round. is the same true for finals?

Hi,

Yes, the same is more or less true for the Final Round.  There are no certificates awarded in the Final Round, but if you log in to your account, there is a link for a downloadable letter, and if your entry placed, there will also be a Press Release.

The last of the score sheets from the Final Round are being mailed this week (August 5 and 6).

Cheers,
Janis

Does anyone know when the 2013 competition certificates will be mailed?  I would have assumed they would have arrived by now.
Hi Ewpert,

Thanks for entering the competition!

The letter and the certificates are both downloads.  Go to www.brewingcompetition.com, and click on the link for your First Round competition.  Log in to your record in the competition and the links for the letter and certificate will be right above the Entry Table on your My Info & Entries page.

Cheers,
Janis

Thanks for the update.

For future conferences, I like the idea of putting the scoresheets out after the banquet so people attending can pick them up.  I looked this year but didn't see them.  Was that something that is normally done or just in Seattle?

I do like the new competition software that has the ability to show the scores in the second round.  Maybe in a few years, the technology will be there to load copies of the scoresheets online too without having someone sit at a scanner and manually upload them.

Thanks for all you efforts and a great conference.  On Sunday I wan't sure if I was going to make it to Grand Rapids, but I've already made up my mind to go!
Hi Stephen,

The ability to distribute the score sheets at the end of the Awards Ceremony is completely dependent on the local organizer and their competition staff.  That's why it happens some years and doesn't happen on others.

Thanks for the suggestion about having the score sheets online.  That would be great, but I'm not sure how we can do it easily if we're still writing on paper forms with a pencil.  I'll definitely look into it!

Cheers,
Janis

Hi Everyone,

This is an update on the mailing of the score sheets, and shipping of the medals, and prizes.  Typically the truck with all of the AHA's gear leaves the conference city on the Monday following the conference and takes about 1 week to deliver the stuff to our warehouse in Boulder, CO.  That is not the case this year.

This year, we had 2 truck loads of gear to ship from Philadelphia to Boulder.  One truck loaded with the bars and beer serving equipment left on the Monday following the conference and arrived in Boulder yesterday.  The second truck with all of the competition gear did not leave until this week.  This means that the competition stuff is still in transit.  The mailing and shipping will commence next week after the truck delivers everything.  I apologize for the additional delay.

Thanks for your patience!

Cheers,
Janis

Hi Denny,

I sure missed you in Philadelphia!  I think there is a clause in my contract about not climbing ladders or driving big trucks while the National Homebrew Competition is not yet completed.

Wow - the competition must have been stiff in Belgian Strong. My beer got a 46.3 but did not place.

No score on one of my entries so I am not sure what went on there.

Did you already get your scoresheets back?  Or are you viewing your scores on the website?

46.3 and not place?  Wow indeed!
Hi All,

Here is an update on the score sheets.  The truck has not arrived in Boulder yet.  As long as that is the case, it pushes out the expected turn around for the score sheets, medals, and prizes.  Sorry for the delay.

Cheers,
Janis

Do the final round scorecards get mailed out?

I would like brew my beer that made it to finals again thus month, but I would like to tweak it in the positive direction.
Hi Frank,

The score sheets are currently on a truck en route from Philadelphia to Boulder, CO.  This usually takes 1 week after the conference concludes.  After that, it will take me another week to 2 weeks to mail all of the score sheets and ship all of the prizes that were not picked up at the Awards Ceremony.  You can expect to receive your score sheet about the 3rd week of July.

Cheers,
Janis

Homebrew Competitions / Re: NHC Final round Competition Labels

Hi,

Amanda is correct; please cut out the entire label and tape it on the bottle.  This will have a bar code, the category number and sub cat letter, special ingredient info, and strength, carbonation, and sweetness info for the Mead and Cider entries.  Thanks!

Cheers,
Janis

Hi CapnJB,

Each year that I have been the NHC Director (2006-present) has had its own set of issues due to the changes we've made to improve the competition.  This year has been particularly difficult because we have switched from online registration and MS Access databases to a completely online paradigm.

Thank you for summarizing your experience so far.  I will keep your summary in my Next Year folder so that we can try to improve the experience for you next year.  With the exponential increase in participation and interest this year, one thing is certain, this competition will be completely different in 2014 than it is this year.

Good luck in the Final Round!

Cheers,
Janis

Homebrew Competitions / Re: NHC Competition Bottle Shipment Worries

If it makes you feel any better, mine also says "On Vehicle for Delivery Today," so if mine was really delivered Tuesday, maybe yours was already delivered too.

I just got the delivery notification, so it sure looks like it was actually delivered this afternoon and truely had a hold put on it. I'm assuming the deadline being missed would be waived in this circumstance.
Hi,

Any packages with delayed delivery due to forces beyond the entrants control will be accepted if they are received within a reasonable time frame.

Cheers,
Janis

So I shipped my bottles to New York yesterday (Monday).  (From my area, it's one day delivery, so there's a day of wiggle room before the Wednesday deadline.)  I shipped to the revised New York address that was recently provided to New York region entrants via email.

So I checked the status with UPS and got this...

Brooklyn, NY, United States  03/26/2013  4:33 A.M.  The receiver requested a hold for a future delivery date. UPS will attempt delivery on date requested. / Delivery rescheduled.

Anyone else get something like this?  Should I worry?
Ken Hettinger checked on this, and your package was just delivered.

Janis

Hi,

For the 1st Round, the bottle labels are your entry form.  Please disregard the instructions about including proof of payment, unless you used a Free Entry Certificate; those MUST be included in the box with the entries.

Cheers,
Janis

I had given some thought to doing some creative editing on the actual label to get in an updated description for a cat 23 beer after the closing date for editing. Figured it would be cheating so didn't do it, but if the labels are your entry form I'm sure there's someone out there who's going that route.

On the other hand, there is a bar code on the label. Will they be scanning to get information or manually copying it from what's written on the label?
Hi James,

If you need to edit your entry in the database, please send me an e-mail with the name of the city where your entry will be judged and the exact edits you need to make.  janis@brewersassociation.org

My entries are on their way.   Only bottle labels were required, right?  The rules and info on the region 11 site said to include your entry form and payment in box along with your entries along with bottle labels attached to your bottles (I know, rubber bands only...no tape :) ).  I didn't see an entry form and the entries were prepaid as required by the AHA, so I assumed this was just the standard template for this competition software.

Good luck to all that are entering!

Are the results posted yet?  ;)

There used to be a form you sent which showed proof of payment, and before that, you probably could pay with check.  Probably just old instructions.

Hmmmm....

So i can't edit my entry description now for 16E? I didn't write anything initially because I was trying to rush to enter and figured I could add that info later. Oh well. The feedback will have to be my prize.  :)
Hi,
Send me an e-mail with your competition city and the exact edits you wish to make.

Homebrew Competitions / Printing Bottle Labels for NHC 2013
« on: March 18, 2013, 12:53:17 PM »
Hi everyone,

To print your labels, go to the Entry Shipping page on the AHA web site (http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/pages/competitions/national-homebrew-competition/competition-information/entry-shipping-drop-off), and click on the name of the city where your entries will be judged.  This opens up a window with the Online Registration for that competition.  Click Log In at the top of the page.  Enter your e-mail address and your password and click Submit.  Now, click on My Info and Entries at the top of the page.  In your page, scroll to the bottom of the page to the entry table.  The link to print labels is on the right side in the table for each entry in the table.

Good luck in the competition!

Cheers,
Janis
