Ingredients / hops aroma while drying not there

Picked my 4th year cascades last weekend and have them drying on a window screen in my laundry room (like I have done for the previous years).   The hops "seemed" ready to pick...  Papery, not spongy, yellow glands previlant and sticky.   But even when I broke some open while picking, they didn't seem to have as much of an aroma as I remembered from past years.   

now while they are drying, there is no aroma again.   In the past years, it hasn't been overwhelming of a smell, but you would definitly smell them when you walked into the laundry room.

Anyone else who has been picking hops notice a difference in the aroma of the drying hops from year to year?   

I am thinking of making a starter size batch with these hops, to see how they come through in a beer, before assuming what flavor and aroma contributions they would make to a full 5 gal batch.

General Homebrew Discussion / dry hop an Alt to add life to it??

Brewed 10 gal of a German ALT, which came out perfect for Alt.   Problem is the beer just seems a little boring now and I am only about 1/2 way through it.

I have a full 5 gal keg of it sitting ready to go on tap as soon as the first keg empties (1st probably has 1 gal or so in it still).

Question... I am thinking about opening the full keg and adding some (qty ??) cascade home grown whole hops for a dry hop in order to change the beer.   I know it won't give any bitter change and very, very little flavor change if any.   But, maybe even a slight change in the flavor and a aroma addition would make the beer more interesting.   Do you think adding a couple ounces of cascade at this point will do anything positive to the beer ?   I don't care if it falls out of style, just looking for something "extra" in this last 5 gal's so I can get excited about getting through this keg.

Beer was originally kegged in early March.   Made from mostly pils malt and some munich with magnum and tettnag.

Tap Handle Insert

Kind of a last minute idea.... I am looking to wip together a homemade tap handle for a get together tomorrow afternoon.   My local shop doesn't carry these inserts to make your own.   Anyone know what the thread size is of a tap?   I know I can pick one of these up at HD or similar place.

All Grain Brewing / higher efficency w/ 10 gal batch than on a 5 gal ?

90% of the time I do 5 gal batches and batch sparge using a 52qrt extreme cooler as mash tun and a keggle to boil.    But, my last to beers were 10 gal batches on this equipment of moderate (1.050 - 1.060) OG's. 

When I do my 5 gal batches, I am consistantly in the 70 % range (+- couple percent.)    On these last 2 each 10 gal batches, I came in between 80 % and 85 %.

I crush my malt myself, and did not change anything regarding that.   I believe my volume measurements are accurate.   

I don't stress out about this too much.  If anything, would prefer to expect higher gravity and get lower, so I can adjust with extract if needed.   On a 10 gal batch, I didn't want to add water before the boil to dilute due to the limited space in the kettle, so I just went with it.

Has anyone else seen an improvement in efficiency by just doing larger volumes?
