General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Fruit Flies
« on: August 03, 2011, 12:22:38 AM »
I got rid of mine by cutting up an apple, putting it in a bowl, pouring balsamic vinegar on it, then covering it with cling wrap and poking holes in the cling wrap. As the apples rotted the flies prefered that over anything else in the house, they crawled through the holes then couldn't find their way back out. They went in there to breed. I replaced this bowl two or three times and haven't seen a fruit fly since.

Interesting idea. I chose the yeast as I wanted the flavor of the malts to shine through.

I have a bunch of malted wheat. I was wondering if there are any opinions on this hybrid of sorts.

5lbs Malted Wheat
5lbs Munich
1lb Dark Munich
1/2 lb Caramunich 60
1 oz Sterling hops 60 minute boil
US-05 yeast

I am not trying to reinvent the wheel here. I would just like to use some of the wheat malt I have. This recipe came from a NB kit but I am subbing wheat for the pilsner malt. I do like dark wheat beers btw.

Your idea makes a lot of sense. But I am trying to avoid loose hops in my fermenter. I am tired of clogged up bottling wand.

FWIW, it's interesting to see how things come around...I recall first posting about using Oxiclean to remove labels back around 99-200 on rcb.

Wow, Denny really has been around a long time! rcb = roman conqueror beer   ;D

And yet, not a hair out of place.

Don't leave them in the oxyclean too long.  A scale builds up on things that soak too long.

? I've left bottles soaking  for 3weeks and never had scales, slim but no scales.

It depends on how much oxyclean you use. If you don't overdo it, it won't leave the scaling, a little too much and you will get a gritty bottle that will take a really long time to clean up. I add about a half a teaspoon to a sink full of water. Does the trick and no grit. I learned that over time.

I remember "double krausening" from beer commercials in the past. I don't remember which of the big 3 made that claim.

Perhaps you're thinking of Old Style.  "Twice brewed and fully krauesened." Once for taste, once for smoothness.

Supposedly, the current formula is once again krauesened.

Thats the one.

Some fleas have built up a resistance to both. The Banter vets, who are somehow associated with petsmart have some stuff that works in those cases. Just remember they sell it but petsmart does not.

There is a club in Lawrence that I know about. But I don't think that is any closer to you than KC.

Cool. I never thought of that. Thankyou very much for your prompt reply.

When I dry hop this time I want to use a hop sack. Is it necessary to sanitize the hop sack? Or will there be enough alcohol in my beer after a week of fermenting to do the sanitizing?
