Ingredients / Re: Hop storage at the LHBS
« on: December 20, 2013, 02:09:12 PM »
I stopped by this store once and while I wasn't buying hops at the time it shocked me that they were not storing their hops in a refrigerator.  I would never buy hops from a HBS that didn't store their hops cold.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Last brew day for 2013

I'll be brewing this weekend since they are forecasting 65 degrees.  I'll probably brew one more time between xmas and new years.

All Grain Brewing / Re: Single Infusion Mash Time
« on: December 17, 2013, 01:56:19 PM »
I typically mash for 90 minutes.  I mash in, make coffee and have breakfast, by the time I'm done it's time to sparge.

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Re: dosing fermcap in the fermenter

I had the same issue with wyeast 3787, I bought some Fermcap in hopes of keeping it in the fermenter, but no luck.

I started my high gravity lagers and beer that need some aging in early fall.  IF I get in I will sample what's in the cellar and send whatever tastes best.

I think the defending Ninkasi and the other three Major Award winners should be the first people they reserve spots for.  I think you've earned the opportunity to defend your title.

I would agree.  We'll just have to wait and see.

Equipment and Software / Re: oxyclean

I've found that oxyclean doesn't always remove all of the krausen ring even after an extended soak, but the PBW will.

Wood/Casks / Re: Styles for wine barrel

Tripel is really nice w/ red wine barrels (ala Allagash Curieux).

That does sound tasty, but Cureiex is aged in Jim Beam barrels.  Our club filled our red wine barrel with a wheat wine.

All Grain Brewing / Re: All grain brewing - pump or no pump?
« on: December 13, 2013, 03:14:22 PM »
I've been brewing for 15 years and have always used gravity, but plan to incorporate a pump into my system next year....easier on the back.

All Things Food / Re: The Sun choke
« on: December 10, 2013, 09:04:52 PM »
I've used them raw in salads and cooked in stir-fry.  I had a friend once who dug up all her j. artichokes and had a choke party with every dish made with the artichokes.....that was once explosive night.  :o

I use picnic taps as well.  After a keg kicks they get a rinse with hot water and the QDs are taken apart and rinsed.  When i am ready to use them again the tap and QDs go into a bucket of starsan.  I do take apart the picnic tap and soak every once in a while.  I've had one of my picnic taps for 10 years, never had a problem.

Just picked up a case yesterday.  I love this beer.  It's not easy to find when you live down the road from Yuengling.

Ingredients / Re: What's your favorite American "noble" type hop?

I've used Mt. Hood a lot as a sub for Hallertauer and sterling in my belgian beers.

Homebrew Clubs / Re: Hospitality suite 2014
« on: November 23, 2013, 02:34:23 PM »
Last year the AHA provided three 12-tap systems for the Social Club (aka Hospitality Suite), so there was usually three clubs pouring 12 beers all the time, although some clubs served on two systems.  The amount of beer that you will go through will depend a lot on when your club's shift is during the SC.  In Philly, we were the only club to serve two separate shifts, but there were 2 or 3 clubs that served on two systems at the same time.

Events / Re: Which hotel to stay at in Grand Rapids

I am sure that someone knows and Gary has already been out to visit the hotel.  But, the folks who put together the proposal for 2015 and the GC are supposed to be tight-lipped about the location.
