General Homebrew Discussion / Brew Dog Recipes
« on: May 04, 2016, 10:56:55 PM »
Not that Brew Dog, your brew dog!

I know many of us are dog fans and I know many of you have made a beer named for / inspired by / helped brewed by a pup.

We're closing up our first charity drive of the year on the Experimental Brewing podcast and I figured I'd do a Brew Dog's recipe collection much lke we did for Session Beer Day.

Got one and a photo of your fuzz bucket that you're willing to share?

Episode 10 of our podcast is now up! On this episode we discuss session beers, beer conferences and pink washing. And then we launch into our much hyped 2 hour marathon of answering listener questions! That’s a lot of talking and a lot of “answers”!  Then it’s time for a quick tip and Drew offers up a memorial to two public figures who passed away recently. One affects your daily life, the other, maybe not so much.

Episode 8 of our podcast is now up! On this episode we discuss beer news, beer politics, beer conferences and actual science. Then we talk about beer ingredients and Marshall Schott joins us to discuss the results of our newest experiment about hop whirlpool temperature - does it matter? We go to the Tampa Bay Area and talk with Brian Fenstermacher of Southern Brewing & Winemaking about how to run a home-brew shop and a 24 tap nano-brewery with a never ending variety. Seriously, you’ll want to listen to hear how Brian has structured the brewery to run multiple simultaneous brews without getting lost! Then it’s Q&A time, a quick tip and Marshall drops a little jam on the something non-beery side of the house to close us out.

All of that and more on Experimental Brewing!

General Homebrew Discussion / Troubleshooting at Club Meeting in Action
« on: January 05, 2016, 12:10:41 PM »
In the Falcons we have an old tradition called Troubleshooter's Corner, which I revived a few years back to help brewers out in a slightly less intimidating environment than the full meeting room. I decided to put it up on periscope.tv the other day and then captured it for everyone to see.

Here's a little writeup about Troubleshooter's and how I view it.

Episode 4 of our podcast is now up! On this episode we tackle what we promise we’re going to do over the next year and how we’re prepared to look like fools! We talk listener feedback about the potential decline of home brewing, nonprofit brewing, the BrewTube community’s loss, a “live” listener tasting that turned explosive and we explore Rancho El Sully aka the 21st Amendment Brewery with Shaun O’Sullivan.

General Homebrew Discussion / Competing in the Heartland and Research
« on: October 09, 2015, 08:30:27 PM »

So here's a little writeup I just did of my trip last week to go visit and speak at the Lincoln Lagers' Sower's Cup Competition. Had a great time and they're doing a bang up job.

Makes me wonder- what do you see going right and wrong around you?

Just a brief primer on getting grain to glass in less than 10 days.

http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201320140AB2609

What does the bill provide?
  • Non-profit homebrew organizations like the AHA, the CHA, the Maltose Falcons, etc can officially hold ABC sanctioned fundraising events (2 per year) for their members.
  • The event must have an educational component
  • The homebrew that's served is considered a donation
  • Signage abounds (e.g. - "hey, this is homebrew, unregulated stuff")
  • Festivals that mix homebrew and commercial beer must have the two physically separated with barriers, monitoring and additional signage
  • No "day of" signups
  • Any fundraising event with more than 50 attendees will be required to notify the ABC 48 hours in advance with the number of attendees.

What don't we get:
  • Homebrew events (club meetings, competitions, etc) at licensed establishments (e.g. bars, breweries, brewpubs)
  • Homebrew Shop Demonstration Brews
  • Homebrew Store Samples
