General Homebrew Discussion / Competing in the Heartland and Research
« on: October 09, 2015, 08:30:27 PM »

So here's a little writeup I just did of my trip last week to go visit and speak at the Lincoln Lagers' Sower's Cup Competition. Had a great time and they're doing a bang up job.

Makes me wonder- what do you see going right and wrong around you?

http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201320140AB2609

What does the bill provide?
  • Non-profit homebrew organizations like the AHA, the CHA, the Maltose Falcons, etc can officially hold ABC sanctioned fundraising events (2 per year) for their members.
  • The event must have an educational component
  • The homebrew that's served is considered a donation
  • Signage abounds (e.g. - "hey, this is homebrew, unregulated stuff")
  • Festivals that mix homebrew and commercial beer must have the two physically separated with barriers, monitoring and additional signage
  • No "day of" signups
  • Any fundraising event with more than 50 attendees will be required to notify the ABC 48 hours in advance with the number of attendees.

What don't we get:
  • Homebrew events (club meetings, competitions, etc) at licensed establishments (e.g. bars, breweries, brewpubs)
  • Homebrew Shop Demonstration Brews
  • Homebrew Store Samples

General Homebrew Discussion / Being Water Wise
« on: January 24, 2014, 10:51:39 AM »
Here in CA we're in deep trouble with the whole "drought" thing. The Governor is calling for voluntary water usage reductions. So I sat down and tried to lay out a set of easy techniques to use less water.

What have I missed?

Homebrew Clubs / Radegast Club of the Year!
« on: January 15, 2014, 09:54:35 AM »
Don't forget guys - March 31st - You need to have your Radegast Club of the Year Entries into the AHA!

What is the Radegast? It's a new award designed to recognize club's that show how awesome clubs can be. After all, not everything about homebrewing is about the number of medals you win. It's about the wild events you throw, the classes you teach, the strange beers, the even stranger members, the charitable efforts you pursue, etc.

How do you enter the competition? Well, that's up to you! A report, a presentation, a video, interpretive dance piece? Whatever will communicate to the esteemed panel of judges that your club rocks. (Hey, the award is named for a Slavic god - that's pretty metal.)

Christmas has been buried for the next year. New Year's is almost here and I'm laughing at the gathering of RV's that has already begun around my house for the Rose Bowl Parade.

You?
