For me, simply slowing the lauter down helped tremendously. And sometimes raking the top of the bed if it has a layer of flour compacted on it.

I coiled some wire and inserted it into my screens, which keeps them from flexing much. Screens shouldn't float but it is possible for grain to displace one so I stir carefully around mine.

Kinda. On occasion I will rinse with tap water a freshly kicked keg, and rack confident that low temps will inhibit any problems. It works. Introduces a variable that some simple discipline prevents. YMMV.

My goodness!

That looks like a real production!

That being said any time I have a problem with my lauter it seems eff is affected. It's probably better to add extra strike water or raise the strike temp to account for the tun and grain temp. Split mash.

Soldier on! Adapt and overcome!

Upon rereading I too suspect the RO. :D  It may be compounded by other factors, but water known/unknowns and known unknowns can be problematic at the very least.

That being said, I have my own RO system (run off the house water softener) that provides nearly pure water. I would not rely on RO stations. Well worth the investment for drinking water at the very least.

My RO TDS ranges from 5-14ppm.

Bad caps or improperly fitting? Are you using import bottles?

Are you using a combination of twist off cap bottles and pry off cap bottles?  Twist off cap bottles may not seal well.

Their website lists "5000X 5 gal coke tanks"!

I thought we'd seen the last of the old cornies years ago, having been sold as scrap to the Chinese. Where have these kegs been hiding?

Arctic Ice

Looks promising for what you want.

There's all sorts of freezer packs or ice packs available out there. They are fairly cheap. I used them for years to keep my fermenters cool. Then I moved to freezers, which perform better and are a lot less work...

If you are using a cooler, I wonder if the tun itself is food grade or meant to be utilized in the manner you intend? Probably not.

I'll go out on a limb and say go ahead and use the GE product.

Autolyzed yeast doesn't necessarily have to give off any sort of a rubber smell. In this case we're concerned with flavor impacts. The flavor is reminiscent of umami or meatlike but in a bad way. IMO this is where  your "muddy" character is originating.

Occam's razor.

Already swelled packs probably full of long dead yeast as well as a few live ones.

Make a beer taste like sh!t in most cases.

Kegging and Bottling / CarbaCap
« on: July 02, 2015, 01:08:01 PM »
Recently I purchased another "Carbonator-valve coupling" on Amazon for a very reasonable price. It was listed as such but when the item arrived it was a "CarbaCap-carbonation system".

I was expecting the Liquid Bread product. It is nearly identical except for the absence of a phone number and patent pending number.

Ownership change?
