After the game the Pope suggested that Notre Dame should become a Lutheran school.   ;D

I was really hoping for more face time of AJ McCarron's girlfriend in the second half.

General Homebrew Discussion / Super Bowl brews
« on: January 08, 2013, 12:38:00 PM »
Any one brewing something up or have something brewed for the Super Bowl?  My wife just asked me last night if I was doing anything for it.  I hadn't planned on it but since my wife gave me the green light to brew this weekend I guess that is what I will do.  ;D

I brewed an IPA a week ago that should be ready in time so I will probably brew and American wheat for those with more delicate taste buds.  ::)

Any one else have anything planned?

My wife bought me a personalized oak barrel top with a galvanized strap around the edge that says "Canova Brewery" burned into it.  It also has the name of my town and est. 1995, even though I started brewing in '92, '95 was the year we were married.

Now I just need to build a bar to put it over.   ;D

I live in a neighborhood with a HOA and have never looked to see if it is against the rules to brew in my driveway!  Of course, I've been doing it for several years now and no one has said anything yet.  Although my son says his friends make fun of him for his daddy making moonshine.  :o

The stars at night are big and bright..

Beer Recipes / Re: Hopping levels to balance a big milk stout
« on: December 05, 2012, 10:29:02 AM »
I would think that recipe could handle up to 60 IBUs but that may just be me.  I recently brewed an Oatmeal stout that was only 1.055 OG but came in at around 40 IBUs and was quite nicely balanced.

As far as the O2 containers, if you have a Lowes they are in the tool section over by the welding equipment.

I entered 3 beers but didn't win anything.  :(

Looking forward to getting my score sheets back and seeing where I need to improve.  Planning on re-entering the Kansas City Beirmeisters competition.

I'm never quite sure how big of a hop starter I am supposed to make.  ;)

Equipment and Software / Re: RIMS Question
« on: November 09, 2012, 11:56:53 AM »
Mine is just a copper tube that returns into the mash down into the grain bed a few inches so the wort does not splash.  I have seen people make manifolds using copper or PVC with slots in it but they usually rest on top of the mash so the wort does not splash.

Congrats!  And kudos to being able to find a tasting close to you!  I have been having an awful time trying to locate one close to me.

I plan/hope to re-take the tasting exam at the NHC in Philly in June once it opens for sign-ups.  They usually have 20 slots rather than 12.

I recently spent a couple days in Fayetteville for work, and spent some quality time (before all the lawyers showed up), at a brewpub/pizzeria that's on a "square" near the hotel and the courthouse.  I enjoyed all of their sampler beers, and had what I would rate as one of the top 3 or 4 pizzas I've had in a long time.  If you know the place, they made a darn good impression.

West Mountain Brewery and Tiny Tim's Pizza.  Great place and the head brewer, Andy Coates, is a great guy.  He comes to our brew club meetings.  He even gave me some yeast from his Saison for me to use in my own.

Glad you enjoyed yourself and I'll let Andy know you were a satisfied customer!

Brewing a SMaSH recipe this weekend.  Maris Otter malt and Centennial hops.  Was going to brew last weekend but the leaves in the yard called my name.  Or maybe it was my wife that called my name and told me about the leaves in the yard... :o
