Yeah, the important part is the end result... if you like what comes out of the bottle or keg, it doesn't matter what the smell is during initial fermentation.  I've had some awesome beers come out of a weird smelling fermentation.

I agree with mtnrockhopper. My inclination is to say no, but if you are confident in your ability to sanitize a plastic jug, you will probably get  by. Not sure about long term use, though. I prefer growlers myself, and have 4 I use for starters, and for storing yeast.

Just finishing "Given Up For Dead" by Bill Sloan.  Excellent book about the battle for Wake Island, which started hours after Pearl Harbor. A rather forgotten corner of WWII history.  True courage and bravery in the face of overwhelming odds.  Makes me proud to have been a Marine. Semper Fi

Other Fermentables / Mead question on acid addition...

I am looking to make my first mead, and on studying some recipes, they call for an acid blend of citric, malic, and tartaric acids. Could I use just citric, or is using all 3 acids truly important? I know the use of the acid blend is optional. Just wondering if I can get a similar result with just citric? Thanks...

All 3 top clubs hail from California...  hmmm. A state with more people that 48 other states. Might as well say clubs from Cali should be disallowed from entering because Cali has a higher population, and more people to be in clubs, (hell, probably have more clubs period) than the other 48 states...NY, where are ya?

Alan "Mr. Fabulous' Rubin passed away on June 8.  RIP Mr. Fabulous.

I guess Jake came and told him they are getting the band back together...  Man, can you imagine the horn section he's playin' in now?

Time to watch Blues Brothers again. I didn't know they actually toured.
They actually toured rather extensively, I have several live albums of theirs

Holy crap!  No way!  The music world is a much poorer place, without Mr. Fabulous.  I truly loved the Blues Brothers, and Alan made that group happen. Wow. Never will there be again a trumpet player of his quality.
I have a Blues Brothers tattoo, and his face is on it, along with all the others.  Truly, a sad day. RIP

1.  Mash out basically stops the enzymatic activity, stops the conversion of starches in the grain to fermentable sugars.
2. Raising the temp of the mash to approx. 168* and holding for 10-15 mins.
3. Debatable, I have and I have forgotten, and noticed no difference.
