The Pub / Aged Weather-beaten Bait Table

I recently built two outdoor tables based on a bait table you would find at the end of a dock. I started this project over a year ago when I left all of the 1x4s out in the weather. All of the boards weathered slightly differently and there was a nice variety of colors and warping. A year later, I used them to create the table surface. All of the boards are pressure-treated.

I wanted it to look aged and as vintage as possible so I intentionally made each board slightly longer or shorter than needed by fudging the pencil marks when i was measuring. After randomly placing the different colored boards I used a random-orbit sander to knock off all of the edges and corners. I did this as randomly as possible to make it look naturally worn and not like i used a router.

When I was finished, I took a saw blade and rolled it all over the surface to makes dents and small holes in addition to the claw side of a hammer to rough up the surface.

I'm pretty happy with how they both came out and I'll probably use one of them as an extra work-surface when brewing.

Subpart C—Location and Use of Brewery

§25.21   Restrictions on location.
A brewery may not be established or operated in any dwelling house or on board any vessel or boat, or in any building or on any premises where the revenue will be jeopardized or the effective administration of this part will be hindered.

(Sec. 201, Pub. L. 85-859, 72 Stat. 1389, as amended (26 U.S.C. 5402))

My question is about the bold part.

What kind of locations would fall under the "jeopardized" description? What would jeopardize revenue?

By "effective administration…hindered" are they talking about agents having easy access to the location?

If you haven't had the chance to watch this new series, you should seriously consider it. Even if you aren't a fan of the superhero/action genre it is well worth your time. Every facet of the show is top notch, from the casting decisions to the writing, acting, cinematography and fight choreography, it just plain rocks.

Its already the 3rd highest rated show on IMDB behind Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. I can't recommend this highly enough. I tried to watch one episode per day but instead I binge watched it in 2 days, then watched it all again.

I'm so glad Marvel decided to bring this to Netflix and let the show runners do what they wanted, the result is awesome. If AKA Jessica Jones is half as good that will be one to watch also.

The holder of this license shall be entitled to sell this product at retail to consumers on the licensed premises of the brewery for consumption on the premises, but only in connection with a tour of the brewery, or for consumption off the premises in a quantity of not more than 15.5 fluid gallons per person, and to offer samples for sampling purposes only pursuant to an annual permit issued by the director.


For the purposes of this subsection, "sampling" means the selling at a nominal charge or the gratuitous offering of an open container not exceeding four ounces of any malt alcoholic beverage. For the purposes of this subsection, "product" means any malt alcoholic beverage that is produced on the premises licensed under this subsection.

In a nutshell, here in the lovely state of Nazi Jersey New Jersey, you cannot have a Tap Room at your brewery where customers can walk in, sit down at the bar and order a beer unless they take a tour first. As everyone who has thought of the idea of opening a brewery has figured out, retail pint sales are where the real money is made.

So for the last few months I've been trying to find out the exact technical meaning of the word "Tour". No one at the local or state level can tell me what a "Tour" is. So if that's the case, I am now taking it upon myself to define it as such:

Brewery Tour: Show them how the brewery works.

So in my current dream-state, this means any info about how the brewery works is part of the tour. Here is where my crazy, loophole-ridden psyche takes over.

What if you put a LCD TV on a stand where your customers walk in that plays a video loop of the brewing process? Is that a tour? Why yes, yes it is.

What if you were walked to the Tap Room by a guide that explains the process by pointing to pictures of the brewing process that are hanging on the wall that leads to the Tap Room? Is that a tour? Why yes, yes it is.

I've come up with about 20 of these loopholes and since there is no concrete definition of what a tour is or what it has to entail, we're free to interpret it as we see fit until they come and take me to jail, right?

I've never used biscuit malt and I was wondering which biscuit it tastes like. In the UK, biscuits are what we call cookies here in the US, but here, biscuits taste like, well, muffins sorta?

I'll assume that the malt originated in Europe, so does it have a cookie-like flavor or more of a KFC biscuit flavor?

Pimp My System / Just Ordered My New Brew Shed

After a few years of saving I finally did it! I ordered a shed to use as my Brew Shed. It won't be delivered for 3-4 weeks but I'm really excited and couldn't wait to post.

The shed is 10'x14' with a 3' covered porch but it has a few unique features. On the porch-side there is an 8' wide opening that has three removable sliding windows. When all three are removed, an 8'x2' wooden plank rotates up from inside and flips into place in the opening creating a finished bar top. How cool is that?!

To give you a better idea of what that looks like, here are some similar designs from the same manufacturer:

My shed will be a combination of the two following designs. Centered window, double doors on the side from the first and the covered porch from the second. You can also see the bar top in place.

I chose a color scheme that matches my home brewery logo and this image is similar to what those colors will look like. Slate Blue siding, White windows, doors and trim, and Black/Charcoal Grey shingles.

I plan to build a brew bench and a 4-tap keezer and include a fridge, a small utility sink, tv, stereo system, etc etc.

We plan to take this shed with us if we relocate, so I'm also going to install outside spigots and electrical so it can just be "unplugged" and moved.

I am going to document the install process so I promise I will have tons of picts once it happens. I plan on spending the winter finishing the inside so it will be 100% ready for next summer. Can't wait to brew in it and have friends over to hang out at the bar!

p.s. also making a firepit!

I saw these pictures of a homemade immersion chiller on another site and the first thing that stuck out were the soldered joints that would be sitting in the boiling wort. Anyone know if that's safe to do? My immediate reaction was "danger wil robinson!" but I wasn't sure.
