Years ago I submitted a beer to a competition, it got dinged for DMS.  Nobody but one judge tasted it, not even a pro brewer friend of mine but the damage was done.  Since then I almost never enter competitions and I designed my kettle so I couldn't put a lid on it if I wanted to.  I guess I'll do some work on my kettle this weekend so I can cover it.  One of my issues has always been the suicidal bees that end up in the kettle during cooling, it will be good to be allowed to cover my kettle!

In the old days with one burner and 2 pots it took up to 8 hours for a 5 gallon batch.  Now with my 3-tiered system I do 10 gallon batches in 5-6 hours.  But I really don't pay much attention to the time, brewing is fun and relaxing, it's my quiet time alone in the garage so I'm usually not in a hurry.  But it also depends on what I'm brewing.  Sparging a beer with a very high percentage of oats, rye or wheat takes longer, even with rice hulls.  Sparging a 10 gallon batch of Imperial stout or Belgian quad with 35+ pounds of grain in the mash tun takes a while, you just can't get in a hurry.

Beer recipes should be simpler.  When I see recipes with several grains/malts added at 2, 3, or 4% of the grain bill I seriously doubt that any but the most discerning super tasters can distinguish any effect, much less identify the flavors from those additions.

A few years ago I bought a sixpack of Sam Adams Oktoberfest that was obviously bad-it tasted like soured Budweiser.  I sent an email to them, that afternoon somebody from the brewery called me and asked for more details about thee brewery of origin, bottling date, etc. A week later I got a check for $25 and a Sam Adams glass.  OTOH I bought some infected bottles from a brewery in Arizona, I emailed them twice and never heard a word from them.

much more expensive, but you'd probably be safer with a garmin or something similar... especially if you're headed to the boonies.

My two favorite things to do are brewing by myself and rockhunting with my wife.  So I got us a book of GPS coordinates of old mines we can collect at, now I need a good app for my Android phone to use the data in the book.  Does anybody have any recommendations?

Somebody ought to think of renaming this thread.  Regardless, on the weekend of Seeptember 12, 2015 I brewed a Columbus/Warrior IPA recipe that boulderbrewer gave me almost 2 years ago.  It wasn't that it didn't sound good, but I just never got around to it.  Now I have, in 3 weeks it'll go in the kegs.  It smelled great, tasted good so hopefully it will taste good.  Thanks boulderbrewer.

I've had kegs of high alcohol beer, sours, and other stuff that I don't drink daily be delicious after 3 years.  The key is too keep the temp fairly constant and keep the CO2 turned on. We just finished a keg of sour porter that I made in October 2012.

I am pretty impressed that they are making such dramatic changes to their lineup and discontinuing regulars. I wish other biggies would follow suit. Looks like this is a couple of weeks old but I was not aware...

Ruination is by far my least favorite Stone Beer-all I tastes is the dish soap my parents washed my mouth out with when I cussed.  My daughter loves it but I can't drink it.  I like their other beers, especially the Smoked Porter, but to me Ruination is not something I would buy again.

I took 2 plants, one of them I cut the shoots at ground level, the other one I pulled the shoots free from the crown.  We'll see which one does better.

I steep about 6 oz's of dark roast Colombian decaf (home roasted)in a pint of 160F water, for an hour or 2, then strain the liquid into the keg directly.  Works every time.

I started mine with towers, I basically built a box on the lid.  I installed a fan to circulate the air from the freezer through the box.  It worked pretty well, but moving the whole freezer away from the wall was a monstrous chore(6 cornies and at least 50 bottles inside).  I redesigned mine with a collar and have loved it.

I'll try a side by side-I've got about 20 crown so I'll trim 6-3 with the weedwhacker, 3 with the shoots pulled and see what happens.
