All Things Food / Super Bowl Food!!!
« on: February 01, 2012, 09:28:25 AM »
Alright, what's everyone making for the Super Bowl? I haven't decided but I'm probably going with either a thai chicken pizza or some smoked bbq chicken pizza. Let's post some great tailgating recipes!

All Things Food / Re: Beer Cheese Soup
« on: January 26, 2012, 08:47:50 AM »
I love this one and serve it at every beer event I have.  Gets raves from the crowd.  You can also add broccoli, or use veggie broth to make it vegetarian.  I generally use a German pils, but have used alt and IPA.

I'd just like to add I have made Denny's soup and it is fantastic. One thing I've learned when adding the beer is make sure it is room temp. It tends to separate more when it's cold.

One other thing... If you can get you hands on some ALTernate Ending beer, that would be best...  ;) Right Denny?

That looks awesome. Next time I do a pork shoulder I'll have to remember to save some and use it for this.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: infected beer?
« on: January 23, 2012, 12:06:06 PM »
From what I have heard over the years from many very well known brewers, there are no known pathogens that can survive in beer. PH and alcohol kill most bacterias that might infect beer.

... and once from a 22-ounce brown bomber in Michigan.

Where did you get this? I've never seen Sculpin in Michigan.

Ingredients / Re: Zythos and Bitterless Black wheat malt

Do you get New Belgium down there? Their "Snow Days Wheat" is brewed with a large proportion of midnight wheat (around 40% IIRC).

There's no way they used 40%. Look at it.

It says it's in there but just a small amount for color I bet.

It's going to color the beer quite differently than a grain that is black because of roast. If the grain is roasted it is black because it had a lot of carbonized matter in it, this turns the liquid darker black. With the midnight wheat the grain is just black so you migh tnot get as much color from it as you would a comprable colored roasted malt. just a guess but it makes sense to me!

Ah, I was thinking it was a roasted grain like carafa. My bad... That could make sense then.

Equipment and Software / Re: Hop Spider
« on: January 10, 2012, 09:10:37 AM »
Wouldn't it be easier to just line the fermentor with a large sanitized paint strainer bag and remove it after you transfer from the boil kettle?

It seems like that would catch any hop material you aren't able to leave behind via whirlpooling.

This would work except I wouldn't want to take a chance on my pickup tube clogging with all the whole hops.

The real key is repeating it. 82 would be bad if the next time you made the recipe you got 52.

You guys need to stop bringing threads up like this. I just cleared out some room in the freezer. I might as well fill them up with some German hallertau huh?

Any way to print from it?

Not that I can tell. You really don't need to though since you only get the web version if you're a member of the AHA and in that case, you already have a paper magazine.

Ingredients / Re: Weyermann Floor Malted Bohemian Pilsner Malt?
« on: December 21, 2011, 08:06:49 AM »
I have used the bohemian floor malted pils malt but not at 100% of the grain bill. It was more like 50%. I blended it with some Pale 2 row. I used a single infusion and had good conversion with it. I liked the beer it made, I drank it too fast though. My wife liked it so much it was gone in less than a month from brew day. I'll be doing another next month.

I was at work. I'll try when i get home.

Yep, tried again. I get a page that says "oops" and tells me to login, so I login and the cycle continues.

Your account may be locked.  I had the same problem when I tried to renew my membership.  I emailed info@brewersassociation.org and they fixed it.

Thanks
