I've had friends give me glass carboys that were used 30+ years ago to hold darkroom chemicals.  One of them had an unidentified metal object rusted to the bottom.

+1 on strong bleach solutions, scrubbing with a carboy brush, and some patience.  I use both of the carboys he has given me on a regular basis, and have never had problems. 

And the third arm I grew comes in really useful on a brewday....

+1 on perfectly acceptable results using a home-made "counter-pressure" filling system. Is it as easy or as storage -friendly as a Blichmann Gun? Probably not. For now, I just don't have the $$ for that setup. Would love one, but if you can purge the bottle with CO2 before filling, you should be fine. Not nearly as convenient, but it will work.

This time of year, is there any way to avoid heat damage if you're shipping your beer to a competition? I'd be as worried about that as oxidation.

I don't remember if it was quinoa specifically, but James at BasicBrewing radio interview the guy from Colorado Malting Company, who gave an impressive spiel about how to malt some of those more obscure ones.

Wow.  They are certainly putting a lot of work into it.  The holy grail here does seem to be something that is an equivalent for "beer" - as we know and love it.

The point is also well taken that there are numerous other malted beverages one can make with fruit and the like that would qualify as GF.  Valid, and some of them are quite good, I'm sure.  But the real prize seems to go to recreating good 'ole malt and hops beer.

Thanks for the update! 

I appreciate your feedback on this.  I would agree that the complexity of the grain bill is going to help with body.  It would make for a longer brew day, but the extra steps are good to know about.

This looks like the one to try.  I will clarify as to whether he can tolerate Gluten-Reduced beer.  He isn't celiac, but has a very goofy food allergy that reacts to the strangest things.

Just to bump this, any comment on how the beer turned out?  My BIL is going on a gluten-free diet, and I'd love to keep brewing some product he can enjoy.

There's a Seacoast Homebrew club?  Ah.... now that's interesting.  I'm right across the border in MA.

Great picture - and yes, in addition to the friendly dog(s), you get to see the new baby boy who hangs out with mom while she makes very accurate hop recommendations!  It's just the sort of atmosphere that people with kids like me want others to realize is the norm for the hobby.

No, although NZ would be prime.  Legal distilling, and hobbit holes. 
Loads and loads of natural beauty, of course.  But stills and hobbit holes reflect priorities. 

Were I to move, the sad irony is that this 10 gal monstrosity would likely not make the "worth shipping in a container" cut.

Just wanted to recommend a LHBS I've just visited in Salem, NH.  Border Brewery & Brew supply http://www.borderbrewsupply.com is run by a nice couple who are "going pro" with both their supply side, and by opening a new tasting room and brewery on premises!

They seem like a really nice couple - people who believe in craft beer, and are working very long hours to make a go of it.  Good prices on grain - they get bulk discounts because of the brewery. 

The setup is neat.  There is the supply store, then you walk into the tasting room, and look through glass doors into the brewery while they're working.  Growler fills available for a reasonable price.  Supply store seems pretty well stocked, although their hop inventory was a little low when I visited.  Nice selection, just running low.  That's not a bad sign - I like to see ingredient turnover.

Anyway, props to these folks.  They're 20 minutes from home for me, which makes them my new LHBS.

And I hesitate to say this, but they've got a line on a ton of ball-lock kegs, selling them for a reasonable price.  Just don't buy them all before I can save up the coin to get a couple!

Looks nice!  Not a controls guy here - it looks like you have full manual control on this?  I kind of like that idea. 

Nice work on the welding - looks sturdy and safe.

There is a lot of wisdom in this.  I wish those "going pro" all the best of luck, and am always inspired of the years of work of "pimping" it took to get them there. 

For most of us, the best way to "go pro" is to support the small guys who really are going for it.
