Yeast and Fermentation / Re: Traveling with wort

I'd pitch when you get home.  And as long as you have a way to keep it from spilling, hit some bumpy roads on the way home.  It will be a nice little 10 minute aeration.

All Grain Brewing / Re: Does it matter?

Doesn't matter as long as your cooler is blue  ;)

I add a couple gallons of water, some grain and stir.  Add more water, grains, stir...repeat until I'm doughed in.  This method works well for me with no dough balls.

Mead...the Red-Headed Stepchild.  ( Michael Fairbrother, you are welcome to use this in your next promo :) )

Kegging and Bottling / Re: dry hopping post carbonation?

I dunk the bag in Star San and suspend with dental floss like others above.  My Arrogant Bastard clone didn't come out quite like I hoped so I am dry hopping in the keg with some Chinook.

Just re-did my spider this morning with 8" SS bolts, washers, and nuts.  The first run went great, but it was only a dry stout with one 60 minute addition ( 2 oz ).  I will have to see how it does with some of the more hop-heavy recipes.

Homebrew Clubs / Re: BN Army wins club of the year.

I didn't hear any boo's either, but plenty of applause?  Most of what you hear is coming from the front table where the BN setup and gets picked up on audio.  And I can tell you there was not much in my section either.

Looking at that crowd and a LOT of people sitting on their hands, it's obvious that there is a lot hard "feelings" out there.  Justin's speech, now that I've had chance to listen to it is pretty funny, about how he has always been proud of every club that has come up on the stage for COTY...

Are there other ways to remove the chlorine?

If it is chlorine, you can fill you kettles the day before you brew and it will evaporate off.  If you local water supply has Chloramine, then campden tablets ( 1 tablet is good for 20 gallons ) work well.  I cut mine in half ( doing 5 gallon batches ) and I still have the original bottle I bought.

you guys know where you buy epsom salts and chalk?  Is there food grade chalk?

Epsom salts at the grocery store or pharmacy.  The chalk ( Calcium Carbonate ), I get from the LHBS or online.

(I boo the Yankee's and Patriots, root for the Cub's very year - just my nature)

Oh, I'll be looking for you in Philly!!!  I can accept that first boo, but the second, well them's is fightin' words  ;)  And if the Red Sox can't win the WS ( i.e. 2012 ) then GO CUBBIES!!

As far as the NB or White Labs club comparison, I believe Justin has mentioned on the show that it wasn't even him that formed the BN club, but some BN Army member.  I'll have to listen back to last years post-NHC show to verify.

The Pub / Re: What's the Weather Like Where You Are?

Hot and muggy yesterday when I was brewing my stout.  I wonder if the gallon of sweat that dripped into the kettle is why my numbers were off.

I'd much rather brew when it's below 30 F than when it's above 90 F.

Based on this thread, I went to Home Depot and bought the parts for the hop spider.

I`m brewing a dry stout today using the BIAB method (inspired by Brad Smith's talk at NHC), using the hop spider, and adding my roasted grains later in the mash (inspired by Gordon Strong).

So much for changing one thing in your process at a time.

Happy 4th everyone!!

I can't say anything about where it might be, but I can tell you that I haven't heard any mention of Atlanta.

Ya' know, Fred said the same thing on the shuttle back to the airport.  I think you guys are just touting the party line  ;).

Honestly, I'd like to survive Philly before worrying about 2014, but I understanding the people who can't make it next year.  I was in that same boat a couple years ago before attending Seattle for my first.
