My Las Vegas water report is:
Calcium (Ca+2): 75ppm
Magnesium (Mg+2): 24ppm
Sulfates (SO4-2): 228ppm
Sodium (Na+): 88ppm
Chloride (Cl-): 92ppm
Bicarbonate / Alkalinity: 138ppm
Hardness Total: 285 ppm

What do I need, and how much of it, to bring hardness up to 750 mg/l?

I followed this process with for an recently brewed Heady Topper clone. It worked well and I will certainly use this method again for future brews.

I bought a 5L Pyrex media bottle on eBay for $40 shipped.

Two for two with me ...

I bought a few bottles of Rogue's Double Dead guy from the same retailer. All of the bottles were skunked and crappy. Rogue sent me replacements, a few extras, and a homebrew recipe for Double Dead Guy (my request). The recipe was from John Maier himself.

I also had a bad bottle of a Tenaya Creek Brewery DIPA. They replaced it with a few bottles.

I made a Judgement Day clone and flamed the raisins in a cast iron skillet until they smoked. Not burnt, but caramelized. There was so much going on in that batch that I can't tell you if caramelizing the raisins before pureeing had any noticeable impact.

Given the situation, should I go jug or flask? Which is the lesser of two evils, smaller volume or shape of the container?

Neither container is optimal for a 2L starter.  Is acquiring a second jug a possibility?  If so, you can split the culture between two jugs after re-suspending the yeast in the preform.  Optimally, a 10L media bottle is probably the best option for 2L starters, but even used 10L media bottles are ridiculously expensive.   I paid $70.00 for my NOS Corning 1395 5L media bottle.

Dang it Mark. I have 5 1 gallon jugs and did not consider splitting the starter into two. I wonder where I left my brain ...
