Given the situation, should I go jug or flask? Which is the lesser of two evils, smaller volume or shape of the container?

Neither container is optimal for a 2L starter.  Is acquiring a second jug a possibility?  If so, you can split the culture between two jugs after re-suspending the yeast in the preform.  Optimally, a 10L media bottle is probably the best option for 2L starters, but even used 10L media bottles are ridiculously expensive.   I paid $70.00 for my NOS Corning 1395 5L media bottle.

Dang it Mark. I have 5 1 gallon jugs and did not consider splitting the starter into two. I wonder where I left my brain ...

I want to try the shaken method but only have a 1 gallon glass jug and 5L Erlenmeyer flask. The next batch in the pipeline is 1.071 - a 2L starter is appropriate.

The 1 gallon jug is too small and the flask is not the best option.

This is a great thread. I have been using Beersmith's default 1.250 for years now. I may go thinner (Denny's recommendation) for the next batch.

What is your beers target gravity?

I guess somewhere between 1.013 and 1.010?

No, I pitch the culture prior to shaking.  I have always inoculated pre-shake.  In fact, the method grew out of my desire to evenly distribute the cells in the culture after pitching.

I shook after adding the yeast, I believe mark shakes than pitches. The beer is going off like gangbusters and the ferm freezer is smelling pretty awesome. I'm using 1028. Last time I brewed with 1028 was years ago, but I don't recall this level of vigor.

Mark pitches post shake.

I have some glass one gallon jugs somewhere around the house. I'll see if any of the rubber stoppers I have on hand will fit. The cheap metal lids do not provide a good seal.

Would a glass sun tea jar (no spigot) work well? With a large opening, it would make cleaning easy.

To add clarity, I shake the starter like it owes me money, and pitch the yeast into the dense foam at its maximum? From the dump, are you swirling/mixing again or leaving it as-is?

I have two batches of un-milled grains packaged for a future batch, about 15 pounds bagged. I won't be using these for several months, possibly 6 or more.

Is there any value in storing the bags in the freezer?

What is the best storage method?

According to Chris White, dissolved O2is taken up by the yeast during the first thirty minutes.  An Erlenmeyer is a miserable vessel in which to make a shaken, not stirred starter due to its geometry.

Doh! I was ready to buy a rubber stopper for my 5L flask. Is a straight-walled bottle materially better?
