Ingredients / Re: thoughts on a wheat beer(non hefe)
« on: April 18, 2014, 06:06:01 PM »
I ended up using 50/50 Munich/wheat. Brew day went pretty well other than a few minor hiccups. I'm brewing again Monday. An IPA recipe I haven't brewed in a while. Looking forward to it. I forgot how relaxing brewing can be!

Thanks for the input/thoughts.

Cheers.

Ingredients / thoughts on a wheat beer(non hefe)
« on: April 17, 2014, 02:14:05 PM »
Hi everyone. It's been far too long. Finally work has slowed down and I'm brewing tomorrow. Thinking about an easy sippin' wheat beer.

I haven't put the recipe together just yet but wondered if anyone has made one with 50/50 Maris Otter/white wheat or 50/50 Munich/white wheat? I have both on hand and thought I would try something different. Probably will have some Amarillo, Centennial and Citra hops in the mix and Wyeast 1450.

Cheers!

yesterday i brewed at my buddy's place. he has a plate chiller. we haven't brewed in a couple months and even though he sent hot water and pbw through the system last brew day, lots of gunk came out after running more hot water. he has a heck of a time cleaning it. but, it does seem to work pretty well with his system.

i use a 50' ½" dia ic. i love it.

i mix my star san with distilled water so i have a 5 gallon bucket full for a few brew days. instead of boiling to sanitize i just leave it in the star san for 10 minutes and then drop into the boil kettle. after chilling i spray with a hose and scrub with a little sponge with soapy water. it still shines to this day.

Beer Recipes / Re: How do YOU spitball new recipes? Name your process
« on: January 09, 2014, 08:54:53 PM »
i had a good brew day with a buddy today and the recipe i used was inspired by an arrogant bastard clone. i had so much fun brewing today i decided to to a 3.25 biab batch when i got home. it's going on the stove right now.

i knew i wanted to try another pale ale with mosaic. i had 2 row, wheat malt and caravienne on hand so i just threw some numbers together in beersmith and got started.

i do this a lot. i like using things i have on hand and seeing what i get on the back end. most of my recipes are made in this way, though i do use a basic framework of the styles i like to brew(ipa, pale, porter being the most common).

however, i have only brewed a hand full of beers more than a few times in the 4 years I've been brewing. i've never been concerned about absolute consistency. i just like brewing different things. i'm probably in a small number of brewers but that's how i like to brew.

cheers

morebeer.com has free shipping over $59 on most orders. and it's fedex(at least for me).

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: When did you switch to all grain?

i did extract for three years before i started 3 gallon biab batches. i've been doing full mash all grain batches over the last 8-9 months. sometimes i wish i was still doing extract for the ease of a simple brew day.

best part of no cable or antenna or dish is no commercials and not paying for 500 channels filled with stuff i'd never watch. the worst part is waiting almost a year to catch up on the few shows i like when they finally arrive on blu ray/dvd.

the internet ads are getting pretty annoying though.

All Grain Brewing / Re: All grain brewing - pump or no pump?
« on: December 12, 2013, 11:10:30 PM »
i've been using my pump exclusively to move strike and sparge water up to my cooler. its been great so far. i was originally going to use it to recirculate wort whilst cooling, but then it's just another piece of gear to clean and sanitize and worry about not being clean enough. i figure moving hot water around for me is well worth it's price.

lots of people will tell you to drop or add stuff. brew what you have and see how you like. it is the best advice i can give. make adjustments from there.

i've got the braid as well and also tip the cooler to one end. i guess the grain is absorbing more water than i thought.  thanks fellas.

i haven't brewed in a couple months and getting back to it today. i'm still roughing in my set up. my previous notes have my dead space at .50 gallon. after today i think i might be off. what are you guys calculating for dead space in this cooler?

thanks. feels damn fine to brew again on a beautiful los angeles afternoon.

cheers?

angel city brewing(http://angelcitybrewery.com) in los angeles brewed one and it sold out way faster than anticipated. last time i was in the tap room, i was told they were working on a second batch. people that have had it loved it. i have no idea what the recipe is though.

the french sip they brew would be aces with a turkey sandwich. angel city experiments a lot and i have not had a beer i didn't like outright. side note, i prefer this place to golden road brewing for those of you who may be visiting la soon.

cheers.
