General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Star San
« on: August 02, 2014, 05:41:16 PM »
I recall hearing a podcast of the guys at Star San saying it is actually good for the beer.  Like a nutrient of some sort.  Anyone else hear this or am I dreaming again?

I heard that one too. Still freaks me out when I pour good wort/beer into a container with anything (foam) still in it.

Just started playing with water profiles. I found a water report that someone else posted from my city. I use the BeerSmith and adjust as needed for style.
Went a little crazy when I found my LHBS had additives in bulk. Like $.10-.25 an ounce. So I have more than I will ever use. :)

One thing you could do before making a purchase is when you have a few types chosen ask for sample or remnants that don't need to be returned then do your worst to them. Iodine, starsans, boiling wort. Leave over night or a day then see how they clean up.

Equipment and Software / Re: false bottom too small
« on: June 28, 2014, 02:36:49 PM »
I don't know what the bottom looks like, so I am guessing it is a standard flat plate with holes.
IF so then you could try getting some tubing and slice it length wise and press it over the edge of the plate all the way around. That should take up the gap for a snug fit.
If it is too snug or too loose get the next size tubing. If you have old tubing that is a good final use. Or you could buy a small length of different sizes and cut out four 1-2 inch sections to test the fit before going all in on the full length.

I had my first small harvest of Cascade Hops, this year.  I have four different plants, but Cascade is by far the easiest to grow.
Where are you that your hops are ready to pick? I'm near Portland OR. and my centennial have cones but will not be ready I think for a month still. I have three cascade plants and none have cones, but just the smallest of flowering.
Oh, and welcome. This is a great forum and there are lots of thing to eat up your on line time.

Putting together a Blonde Ale. Haven't decided if it will be something more than that. I saw a recipe for a Citrus Blonde that sounded good. Still working out the details. But brew I will.  :)

Had a good time at the AHA Rally in Portland.

Had my name picked for one of the raffles. Lifetime supply of bottle caps. I guess I may have to break down and find (buy) more bottles.  :)

Were you the John I was talking to yesterday?  Nice to meet a forum member!  Also had a chance to meet Pinski at the rally.

Yes, it was I that bent your ear for a time. It was a pleasure to meet you in person. Look forward to your book.

Thanks for the advice on water. I will let you know how it turns out.

Not to bad here. Missed my mash starting temp by 2 degrees low. It fell a lot more then I remember it in the past. But then again I was planning on a 60 min mash and it turned into 90. So it will be interesting to see what I end up with. Started at 152 and ended at 146.
SG was to be 1.055 and I got 1.060. Never missed high before. So I'm OK with that.
This was for a brown ale. Using WLP005 for the first time as well.
Can't wait for it to finish.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Carboy Disaster

I am wondering if it has something to do with the way the glass is made now days. You hear stories of Pyrex exploding because the new formula is different then years ago. Wondering if the same could be said for carboys?
For those that have had disasters from broken carboy, was it a newer one or older? IS there such a thing as an old carboy, or are there no old carboys because they don't live forever?

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Just Add Water

When I turned 21 (all so many years ago) I was given a "Beer In A Bag". Just add hot water. I don't recall if there was a yeast packet or not. Shake, store, serve. For what it was I remember it not being too bad. The first third was nicely carbonated and the rest just went down hill from there.
I must say that it gave me the start to home brewing. It just took me a few years to jump all in.

I have three I like to keep on tap. A Coffee Stout, A Dry Hopped Red, and for my wife a very hoppy IPA. I like to brew more than I can drink. About a year ago I was talking with a co worker about brewing and he asked if I could brew up something for him. He told me what he likes and I proceeded to make it. I was lucky that he was able to articulate what he liked and didn't about each batch. So I could make changes. After about five he tells me I nailed it. THEN I needed to reproduce that each time. It was amazing how hard that can be. But it is incredibly fun.

One of the earliest memories of TV is Dr Who.
Don't get BBCA now and haven't looked for it streaming. But the last few years were good. Maybe when he re generates again I will look for it again.

So for some reason I scrolled all the way to the bottom of the forum listing and saw the static of

So I gotta know, what in the world was going on on Feb 20 that so many people were on line?
