Beer Travel / Re: San Diego Beer & Brewery
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:27:51 PM »
There are just over 40 breweries/brewpubs in San Diego county now, so what type of beer you prefer will narrow down your search. A couple well supplied bars are Hamiltons, and Tornado, lots and lots of great Cali beer on tap.

Other things SD is known for the Zoo, Sea World and the Wild Animal Park are all among the best anywhere. Costco sells a group ticket to those fro a good deal as they are not cheap.  The board walk over in Mission Bay should not be missed on a warm sunny day.  A day trip to Tijuana is always an adventure, the trolley will take you to the border.

Steve, I was recently at New Holland in MI and not knowing just asked. They gave me 1$ off my flight with no problem. I don't see them anywhere on the list, maybe they are ready to join if they aren't already.

^^^+1

i have more people with back issues in my office who are runners than i do home brewers. just saying.   8)
remember 5 k is 3 miles. you could walk that slowly in under about an hour.  take your time and practice walking with a good pair of shoes.  and for heaven's sake please stay off the treadmills.  i see way too many medial collateral ligament injuries on those damn things.

Boston marathon was yesterday, 26,716 registered participants. Looks like the AHA should be setting up recruiting booths to save these poor souls. ;)

The surface that you run on will have the greatest affect on your knees, joints. Shoes are so much nicer now  but the new fad is the five finger shoes which are barely past being barefoot. There are indeed many exercises that create less wear and tear on the body than running. Not every body type will lend itself well to running. Running is great exercise and lots of people do it without suffering direct knee and joint issues.

Its very funny to me to read of the ills of running on a beer website in the worlds most obese nation. :o

People run faster and farther than any time in known history- isn't that evolution?

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Hop Topics
« on: April 15, 2012, 06:43:15 AM »
Why are hops listed under ingredients? Shouldn't they merit a category of their own? Yeast have their own. Grain and extract each have their own...

I don't see where grain and extract have their own category, brewing is the category. Yeast is coupled with fermentation. Grains, extracts, hops, adjuncts, water, and any other ingredient are and should remain in ingredients.

1 lb/gallon*(1 kg/2.2lbs)*(1 gallon/3.8 liters)=1/8.36 (kg/liters)

I used rounded conversion values, so if you are the type that wants more digits you can use John Palmers number.

So...

1,037 Potential Extract is...

multiply 8.36 by whatever the ppg # you are converting. In your case 37*8.36=309.32

Well, there are over 40 now and it's a big county, so depending on where you'll be staying and what you'll be doing, and what you like, it just depends.  Toronado and Hamiltons will have lots and lots of different San Diego as well as California beers.
You mentioned your availability in Boulder so I'm sure you have had Ballast Point and Green Flash. Stone is on your list, its a neat place to visit and they are also great in that they will have several taps of other micros that they think are great.
Alpine is awesome but out of the way a bit. Alesmith should be visited. If you find yourself in Coronado you should check out the namesake brewery there. Pizza Port in Ocean Beach is very good and you can then walk to Newport Pizza and the Harp which are bars with some great taps.
Enjoy...

Beer Travel / Re: Michigan Breweries
« on: April 01, 2012, 03:02:56 PM »
Thanks for the tips, leaving on tuesday for the big mitten. Looking forward to drinking some Michigan beers the next several days. Will be hittting Hopcat and Founders for sure, not sure what else will fall into place. Looks like I can get Bells a lot of places so I 'll try their stuff on nights in, nothing usually compares to brewery fresh though. :)

Where I grew up we had a few sayings that wouldn't make much sense to an outsider.
 Eddie would go
 Keep the country, country

Eddie would TOW!

That made me chuckle
