Homebrew Competitions / Re: East West Rivalry?
« on: April 28, 2013, 01:44:27 PM »
Sheet!  I usually judge that competition but I can't make it this year.  Wanted to give you some good judging! ; )  Does Brian know to expect them?  Although entries were due yesterday.

How did this get started?

This is from "How To Judge Beer" on the BJCP site:  "First off, avoid negative comments."  And "Diplomacy is a valuable skill as a beer judge."

How do you carbonate the kegs?

Yep, the cold trub doesn't settle as well.

I give it a good swirl with my brewing paddle and then let it settle for at least 15 minutes.  Then draw off from the side of the kettle.

You can do a "partial boil" by boiling in the biggest pot you have and then topping up with water.  Your NG stove will be much cheaper than a propane burner.  And SWMBO will learn to appreciate your fine brew and its wonderful aromas throughout its process.

Ingredients / Re: Wyeast Nutrient Blend how much to use?
« on: April 17, 2013, 06:36:46 PM »
I add a pinch to my starters and still add 1/2 tsp to my wort.

+1 Ditto

I knew a couple brewers who did that and were consumed by their own ravenous mutated giant yeast.
Wasn't there a movie about that?

Events / NHC full pass wanted - last minute ok
« on: April 17, 2013, 12:06:02 PM »
Howdy,  I have a full pass, but my friend in Philly could only get a social pass.  He's already got the time off and would love to get a full pass, last minute even.
Cheers, Tom

Now, whenever they don't bring the itemized receipt back I ask for it again.

I also use different color O-rings for each side.  Black for beer, green for gas.

+3 on a low mash temp.  Around 10+% sugar, the rest pilsner malt.  I like WLP 550.

Is there brett on barley and wheat malts?  I do a sour mash with crushed malt and seem to get a little Brett.

And the KROC homebrew club is in Broomield or the Hop, Barley and the Alers are in Boulder.
