General Homebrew Discussion / Best Deal on Simcoe and Warrior
« on: January 15, 2011, 05:13:43 PM »
1lb size.

I checked out morebeer.  .25lb of Simcoe is $7.50.  That translates to $30 per lb.  No Warrior at their site.

General Homebrew Discussion / Dental Crowns and IPAs
« on: January 07, 2011, 04:57:28 AM »
I went in for the first procedure in getting an old tooth/crown removed to be replaced with a new one.  There was a cavity under the old crown that had to be gotten to, so, good bye $900 crown.  It was a two hour procedure with a bit of novocaine and other bondos to fill the drilled out tooth stump.  When I got home, I went straight to the fridge and pulled out a new, untried bottle of Oakshire's IPA.  The initial taste set me back as the worst flavor I'd ever encountered in a beer of any kind.  It had a strong mint/plastic finish that was truly shocking.  I choked down about half the 22 ouncer, and dumped the rest.  I emailed Denny immediately asking if Oakshire used some odd spice or other ingredient in its IPA.  I intended to call the brewery the next morning and tell them they had an infected batch being sold at the local Fred Meyer's.  Good thing I didn't.  After emailing Denny, I went and pulled a pint of homebrew from a keg and was shocked to find the exact same infection!  Well...the light bulb went on immediately, and a lesson was learned about drinking beer immediately after having dental work done.  Don't do it.  Well, I guess I'll be buying another bottle of Oakshire's IPA which Denny insisted, is awesome!  I'm sure it is, just not after dental work.

Commercial Beer Reviews / Lagunitas Hops Stoopid DIPA
« on: December 31, 2010, 09:59:07 PM »
So, I'm on the second half of a 22-oz bomber.  Pretty well balanced and easy drinking.  Not the most aromatic DIPA I've ever had.  I would have expected more hop presence, in general.  Decent for the price, but it ain't no Pliny.

Commercial Beer Reviews / Russian River Blind Pig IPA

Is this worth driving 30 minutes to drink on tap?  What hops did Vinny use in this one?  Is it just a smaller version of Pliny?

All Things Food / Prime Rib help needed
« on: December 22, 2010, 02:00:40 PM »
Okay.  I have a 12lb bone-in, prime rib roast.  I need help gauging the time.

At 350, assuming I let the roast reach room temp before putting it in the oven, how long before it will reach an internal temp of 125F?  I'm shooting for med/rare.

My wife likes the way the the Sizzler Steak House gets a seasoned crust on the prime rib.  Is there a trick to achieving this?  I probably won't feel like experimenting this time, but down the road I will.  Thanks.

All Grain Brewing / Saaz in a German Pils

Would it be considered outside the style guidelines to use Saaz in a German pils?

All Things Food / Oyster dressing recipe?

I've always wanted to try this dish, and now is the time.

 I'll be using jarred oysters.

Any help?  Thanks.

Commercial Beer Reviews / 2010 SNCA

Looks like about time for reviews of the 2010 SNCA.  I'll certainly try it, but how does it rate to past years?

Ingredients / Great Western Wheat...German Wheat
« on: November 11, 2010, 02:32:15 AM »
I guess one is white wheat, and the other is red wheat.  Will a hefe suffer noticeably if domestic wheat malt is used over the imported German variety?

Commercial Beer Reviews / Eel River Brewery?
« on: November 09, 2010, 01:43:21 PM »
A local restaurant is hosting an Oysters and Ale night that will feature ales from the Eel River Brewery.

How do their APA and IPA rate?

Any standouts?

How many of you guys have had the real deal?

Where I live now, in Southern Oregon, they try and fake it by cooking the pork in a frying pan, with chiles/spices.  It doesn't fly.

General Homebrew Discussion / Shipping single bottles...Tricks?
« on: November 04, 2010, 01:58:08 AM »
From time to time, I'd like to be able to ship a single bottle (12oz, or 22oz) to a worthy friend.  Does anyone have a simple, yet effective way to do this?  I'm talking breakage free as well as cheap.  There has to be a better way than wrapping a single bottle in bubblewrap, and then paying shipping on the box that could get crushed.  Tricks?

Commercial Beer Reviews / Aktienbrauerei Kaufbeuren Jubilaums Pils
« on: October 28, 2010, 02:07:57 AM »
It's interesting to drink this excellent pils after having had a bottle of Trumer a short while ago, and note the differences in flavor.  This Jubilaums is on the sweeter side, almost spicy in a way compared to the Trumer's bone dryness.  Both interpretations are winners in my book.  Perhaps my own pils isn't too sweet after all...

Any info on the hops used in the Jubilaums?

Commercial Beer Reviews / Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA
« on: October 27, 2010, 11:44:11 AM »
Maybe I'm losing my taste for AIPAs, but I could barely get this one down.  The sweetness was killing me, even if the bitterness was assertive.  Maybe I don't like munich in AIPAs...

I was going to put this link in the BBQ thread, but decided it might get buried there.

I wonder how many proposals this gal has received?  Check out her homemade smokehouse.
