I already emailed a few legislators about the petition. It has been proposed in Ohio to raise the ABV from 12 - 18% but I don't know if it has a lot of support. That's where this petition comes into play.

EDIT: I read somewhere that the proposal to increase the ABV limit on beer to 18% has been removed from the budget in 2011

It's a petition to change the law. 12% is absolutely arbitrary and should be changed to something more reasonable.

I can buy a Flying Dog Double Dog at 11.5% in the state of Ohio but I can't buy a Great Divide Barrel Aged Yeti because it's 12.2%...

It's a ridiculous law.

Should. But, not necessary. There have been people signing from California, Massachusetts, Colorado, etc.

Hello,

My petition is to remove the 12% ABV cap on beer in Ohio. You can find it here:

Today, Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati all have a large population of home brewers and craft beer fans who
need to leave the state in order to find beer that we can't get in Ohio because of the 12% ABV cap on beer.

We do not believe this is about "getting drunk", it's more about experiencing good craft beer. I firmly believe that we need to find beer in our own state instead of stimulating the economies and increasing the tax revenue of other states.

At the time of this writing I have 464 signatures within only two days of the petition being published with new signatures every couple minutes. If you believe in this cause, would you please pass this around to the members of your home brew club and to family and friends elsewhere?

If it turns out that you end up losing money over time, will you still continue to do it? Sounds like you have very little overhead, which is a boon, but when you consider how much your time is actually worth it doesn't seem possible to even break even on a 10 gallon system. OTOH if you are doing it to prove a concept and get someone on board who wants to fund a real brewery then it could be totally worth it. Just my .02. Not trying to discourage anyone from their passions.

As I've always said, I like to hear everyone's point of view.  I live in a town of about 30,000. the next bigger town is about 75 miles away.  I'm not in this to really make a money.  But, I will say that my business (that is working out so far) shows that my partner and I will net, about $120 for a full day in the brewery?  The math works out to be about $6/hr.  I know of know other hobby that I love so much that will aactually pay me $6 to do.  Can I quite my day job?  NOT EVEN CLOSE.  And it may be that after a couple years of this, we decide it's not worth it.  But I can tell you that a day in the brewery with the woman I love, making darn good beer, is a very enjoyable activity.  We met because of homebrew two years ago.  And, we're getting married on the 18th. 

But, I know our model does not work for most folks when they think about "going pro."  I post my story and experience to show it is actually quite simple to go legit, and sell one's beer.

What is your usual daily schedule when you say that you haven't quit your day job? What is the like?

Speaking of. All I wanted for Christmas was Stone's Enjoy By series which is supposed to be the freshest IPA you can get. I heard it was the best IPA ever tasted. But, how would I know? I didn't get a chance to taste it.

There is something to be said about making a high gravity phenol concoction and aging it overtime to reduce the fire flavor.

That said, when I brew an IPA, I drink it ASAP.

I would get the 10-gallon cooler.

Think about it this way, you can use it for smaller batches, yet if you feel it necessary to increase your batch size you can do that as well.
