All Grain Brewing / Re: 5 gallon batches with SABCO mash tun
« on: March 01, 2011, 07:59:32 PM »
I'm in tschmidlin's camp. My RIMS mash tun is an inverted keg. I cut the bottom out and fitted the top (now the bottom) with a 1/2" ball valve. this way i get every drop of wort.
There's about 1.5 gal. of "dead space" below the false bottom/plumbing/heater etc. but since i am recirculating the wort, I dont think mash thickness has much effect on overall efficiency. So i usually figure a 1:1 water to grist ratio and add another 1.5g, and use that total quantity for determining strike. any thoughts?

On their web site is a submittal form for homebrewers. They suggest using a plain old plastic drinking water bottle rinsed well...

Not here! 11 yrs., 300+ batches all fermented in carboys and still dig it. I liken it to watching a campfire or fireplace...

Same here. Last night while staring into the malstrom I was thinking "what a great screensaver!".

I tried using a polycarbonate tube for my HLT but it got soft when I heated to sparge temp 180*. I was led to believe polycarbonate was stable up to 250*. What gives?

I made a copper Counterflow chiller, with a March Pump. At some point during the boil, I Recirculate the boiling liquor with the water turned off. This sterilizes the lines. When done I backflush with plenty of water to clean, and that's it. Am I playing "infection roulette"?

Where can you find 50' of stainless tubing for 40 bucks? Grainger has 316 welded stainless 1/2" OD; .2" wall thickness for $128. I use a copper 3/8" counterflow pushing it with a March pump. I guess I could build a stainless one and would still be cheaper then Blichman's Therminator. Anyone worked with SS tubing? is it much harder to bend?

Ditto on the Johnson controller. I took the shelf panel out of the door on one of my "college style" refridgerators and a carboy just fits. when lagering 2 carboys or a larger batch i switch to the chest freezer. I rigged a block & tackle harnessed to a Beer Hauler for lifting. Works pretty sweet.

All Grain Brewing / Water Testing
« on: February 28, 2011, 04:28:43 PM »
I live in the Annapolis MD area and am on a well. Recently installed a carbon filter in my RIMS and was wondering where i can get my water tested. Mainly looking for Ca, Mg, Na, S04, Ci and Hc03. When I talked to "the Culligan Man" he gave me some general ideas but was not much help other than trying to sell me a water conditioner. in order to tweak my water profile to specific style guidelines I need to know what I am starting with.
Does anyone know where I can have my water tested?
