All Grain Brewing / Re: FG too low again!
« on: December 01, 2013, 06:59:13 PM »
Just out of curiosity, what impact would that have?

Heating the first runnings will help to denature the enzymes. If you just let your first runnings sit while you sparge, the enzymes in the liquid will continue to work on the sugars (at a lower temp), which leads to a more fermentable wort and low final gravities... At least, this is how things go on my system. YMMV.

Good luck! I hope you figure it out!

I had the same trouble for a while. Are you batch sparging or fly sparging? I batch sparge and used to let my first runnings sit in the kettle while I sparged. I now turn on the flame right away and start heating my first runnings while I sparge/vorlauf/drain my second runnings. It fixed my over-attenuation problem and I get to a boil faster. Win-win!

Good luck. Admittedly, you'll likely find specialized info in actuarial circles,  as we tend to work mostly on insurance problems. However, you should find many of the tools useful; lots of them can be generalized to other areas.

Consider looking around some actuarial forums. The Society of Actuaries offers a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst credential. I'm not sure what you know about actuaries, but you'll probably find that it's a bit more rigorous than "never, ... , defnitely" and "negligible, ... , catastrophic".

All Grain Brewing / Re: Water profile and IPAs
« on: November 17, 2013, 08:54:24 PM »

Thanks for the advice. I set the dilution % to 100, the water type to RO and the style to pale ale. I've got my water amounts in as well. So now it's just a matter of inputting different minerals/amounts until I land within the desired range, correct? My apologies for all the questions but this is an aspect I've never tinkered with before. I usually buy bottled water or toss some campden tablets in my overly chlorinated tap water :0)

That's about right. I've found Bru'n Water to be very easy to use. My dark beers were much better than my lighter colored beers.... it turns out that my water is moderately alkaline and somewhat variable, so building from RO has helped me improve both quality and consistency. Also, my mash pH when building up from RO is always within 0.1 of what's predicted by Bru'n Water. YMMV.

Edited to add: I really like the Pale Ale profile, but have only used it for a APA and AIPA.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but SlapShotz has a few craft selections. I'm having a La Folie right now. They also have Humalupalicious, bellaire brown, fat tire, among others.

I'll be in town on business from Sunday evening until Tuesday evening....

I'm from MI and I'm hoping to try some brews I can't get at home. What are some good beer bars or bottle shops in the area? I'll be staying at the Marriott near the airport, so close to there would be ideal.

Thanks!

I can access both eZymurgy and the NHC presentations with the same credentials I'm entering for the app. And I was previously able to log in to the app and read the magazine with the same credentials. No dice now.

I can install it but every time I try to log in I get "Login Failed - Invalid username or password".  Unless it uses different usernames or passwords that my standard login it isn't working on my droid razr m.

Not working on my Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Tab 2, either. Getting the same error as quoted. I have previously been able to use it on both devices.
