Sorry to be pedantic but buying a premade item is less work than building one. Regardless of your hatchet abilities. ;-P

Equipment and Software / Paint options for zinc plated slotted angle
« on: February 04, 2014, 07:57:04 PM »
I'd like to build something like this:
http://www.aleiens.com/profiles/blog/show?id=2664506%3ABlogPost%3A2545

But I'd also like to paint it. I imagine black high temp paint will work but I'd rather it be gray. I've looked around and the only other colors i see are for engine block paint and it's only rated to about 500F.  Any suggestions?

I was so disappointed with how cloudy this German pils was at first.  It took a while but finally cleared up.

And for either cooler type use a bazooka type screen to save yourself some work over making something out of the stainless washer hose.

Why get a Thermapen when there are other instruments from Thermoworks that are just as accurate and FAR less expensive?

Bragging rights!

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Interesting Judging Phenomenon
« on: January 31, 2014, 12:55:33 PM »
In two different comps I had an odd thing happen with the same entry: one judge said no hop aroma, the other said too much hop aroma in each comp. Just can't please some people.

Regarding judging your own beer blind a few months ago I had an entry with a wild yeast infection. It wasn't until I tasted it thinking I was having someone else's beer that I noticed how bad it was.

Perception is a weird thing.

Isn't there a bjcp rule about the lowest score being 15?  13 seems just mean.

I got an open box one over a year ago. Love it.

All Grain Brewing / Re: All grain brewing - pump or no pump?
« on: January 29, 2014, 08:01:47 AM »
I've found this remote control to be brilliant when used with my pump:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001Q9EFUK/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_details_o01_s00_i00

When draining the mash gets down to the last slow bit I can stay parked in my chair and stop the pump for a minute while more builds up. I love it.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Idea for siphoning to keg?
« on: January 09, 2014, 05:27:20 PM »

I recently started using a pump with a cheap speed controller for a router. Does a great job and I hope to hook up a plate filter in the future. It's overkill but saves me lifting a carboy and hurting my back.

Sounds like a recipe for oxidation, but I take it you haven't had any problems?

No more than I would have had before. I purge the keg with co2 so the only oxygen would be what's in the tube from the carboy to the keg.

Kegging and Bottling / Re: Bottling off a keg
« on: January 09, 2014, 01:43:57 PM »
I pulled the spring tip off my bottler and shove the tube into a picnic tap. All other steps about the same. Sanitize. Chill bottles. 2-3 psi on keg.

Ingredients / Re: Dry hopping temperature

Still too many parameters that need to be clarified.

Pellets or whole cone?
How many days of contact?
All varieties of hops? High alpha or low. High cohumulone or low. Etc.
