It's hop harvest season and there's a sale on this! Thought I'd spread the word because I've been on the hunt for one lately and found this. Great deal!

Ingredients / Sanitizing Homegrown Hops
« on: August 09, 2012, 05:39:11 PM »
Hey there!

So I'm in CO and I've just harvested my hops (Cascades). I plan to use them on my brew this Saturday where I'll be dry hopping. How should I sanitize these?  I've heard that hops are naturally bacteria free, but considering I dry them out naturally, I'm worried that dust, etc could infect.

1. How do I sanitize hops (if needed) w/o destroying any volatile oils?
2. How worried should I be about this?

Thanks!

Equipment and Software / Reversed Immersion Chiller
« on: August 02, 2012, 10:35:47 AM »
Just curious if anyone else has done this.  To be honest, this piece of equipment originated by my misunderstanding of the immersion chiller.  I run the water hose in the barrel and run the hot wort through the copper.  It's extremely efficient.  During the winter, i just fill the barrel w/ water and keep it cold by shoveling snow into it.  When cleaning my keggles prior to brewing, I always hook them up to this and runoff all the cleaning fluid through the tubing.  Never had an issue w/ infection and I've been using this for years now.  It works great, but curious if anyone else does this.  I'll be upgrading to a plate chiller soon, but only because it takes up a lot less space.

I say whatever brings more money into the AHA the better.  So what if people pay for a membership only to get GABF tickets?  Maybe when zymurgy ends up in their inbox they open it up, do a bit of reading, and discover the passion we all enjoy.  If not, their money benefits us anyway.  I dealt w/ the error messages this morning on Ticketmaster and I still got my tickets.  I do however feel for the people that missed it.

I bought tickets for sat afternoon (mailed) and sat evening (printed).  The printed ones have "member only entrance" on them, but like what was said, it's not going to matter for the afternoon session.  It's definitely a huge gaffe that you could purchase w/o a member number.  Hopefully this issue is addressed soon.  Also, I've been a member for a while and have only recently started using the forum.  Been brewing for many years though!

I can't imagine they'll revoke any tickets sold this far.  Or at least I don't know how they'd go about verifying all the tickets sold thus far.  Ticketmaster doesn't exactly scream customer service.  If they do go after people who purchased on mobile and didn't enter their AHA #, I hope they do it in a convenient way... I mean, we did pay convenience fees right??  ;)

I guess people purchase through mobile aren't getting prompted for their member ID.  I see an issue coming in the near future.

glad to see everyone else is having this problem too.  their "live chat" is closed today and their phone line is busy.  sounds like a lot of angry beer drinkers!

+1 I think a 30min addition rounds out my APA's nicely. It all comes down to your preference and style though.

I love my infrared gun, but I've yet to trust it for anything aside from mash.

I think it should be noted (for any people wanting to built their own tower in the future), you'll also need to cut 8 pieces w/ 45 degree angles to weld into the corners on the top.  I don't know why I forgot about this in my plans, but it was simple enough to add in.  My burners come in this week (hopefully).  Getting excited to mount the banjo burners.  I'm also going to paint the frame w/ high temp paint.
