i'm also not necessarily interested in making a full 5 gallon batch either.  a simple 1 or 2 gallon would be more than enough.

Ingredients / now hear me out first....

so i was sitting at work talking to the guys about the next beer i wanted to brew, when suddenly my manager sticks his head into the conversation and tells me i should brew a guacamole beer.  i was surprised, i was disgusted, i was intrigued.

now i know i should have dismissed the thought outright, but my manager has never willingly let a drop of alcohol pass his lips in his entire life.  so the answering phrase that came out of my mouth was "if i make it, are you gonna drink it?"  to which he grudgingly agreed.

so in the interest of breaking in a 35 year old virgin liver, how would you go about making a guacamole beer?  also i'm not at the all grain level yet, still just partial mash.

Yeast and Fermentation / Re: Rehydrating Dry Yeast
« on: October 15, 2012, 09:12:22 PM »
i've rehydrated, sprinkled, and made starters with dry yeast.  sprinkling is definitely longer lag than the other 2 from what i've seen.  as for starters vs rehydrating, i don't necessarily think the difference in lag is worth the time and materials put into a starter.

meh, so it'll be a session beer.  add another pound or 2 of DME and you'll take it up over 5%.

a little crystal 40, maybe some carapils or victory or something fun, some northern brewer, and you have a cali common.

Kegging and Bottling / Re: Corn Sugar vs Table Sugar

i understand you were shooting for high carb levels, but wouldn't that much sugar significantly impact your ABV?

IIRC, it's 1 tab/gallon.

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Re: Black Forest Stout truncated
« on: September 02, 2012, 02:59:23 PM »
cracked open a bottle last night.  it's only been in bottles about a week but i decided to give it a try.  turned out excellent.  i had several comments of "it tastes like guiness with chocolate added."  didn't get the opportunity to squeeze fresh oj in it yet, but i'll get to that soon.  my little brother thought i should serve it with a shot of half and half in it.  which makes me think maybe i should add a little lactose next time for a 'milk chocolate stout.'

i took a sample the other day and, all things considered, i think it tastes just fine the way it is.  think i'm gonna nix the cherries and just call it a chocolate stout.  also, i got the impression it would go great with a squeeze of fresh orange juice.

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Re: Using Ice to cool wort?

so if i wanted to cut down on my water use, i could just fill some plastic bottles with water, freeze them, sanitize them, and drop them in my wort instead of an IC?  hell, for that matter would i even need to sanitize them?  then just refreeze them when i was done?

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Black Forest Stout truncated
« on: August 13, 2012, 09:12:08 PM »
so i started brewing the black forest stout recipe from Brewing Classic Styles.  it's been fermenting for about a week now and i figured it was about time to go get the cherries to add to secondary.  problem being that cherries are out of season now and even frozen ones are relatively expensive for my budget atm.

so my question is: has anyone tried this recipe sans cherries?  the stout recipe looked good enough to stand on its own, but will i need anything to balance out the chocolate?  after dropping $60 on this batch already, i'm not really interested in dropping another $20-$30 on cherries.  any inexpensive fixes are welcome!

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Re: amarillo pale ale

so if i wanted to do FWH on an extract with grains batch (which is where i'm at now), would i just throw in my hops with my steeping grains?

and thanks for the recipe tips!

so if i wanted to convert this weeks RotW to extract with grains or mini mash, how would i go about it?  also can someone explain the 'first wort' hop addition?

Yeast and Fermentation / Re: What are you paying for your yeast?

i'm in Cedar Rapids, IA, and i can't get yeast for less than $6 a package - dry or otherwise - without driving an hour 1 way to dubuque.  think i'm going to wait till this fall when the weather's cooler and order a bunch in bulk from there.
