The Pub / Brewpubs that serve BMC
« on: September 15, 2010, 07:36:16 PM »
I've been to a couple brewpubs that serve the bigguns right next to their house brews.  At both places, their house beer sucked and more people were drinking coors light than anything else.  If it were my brewpub, I don't think I could take myself seriously if I served my beers and coors light on the same tower.  Why the extra expense of making your own brews?

Anyone else been to places like this?  What justification is there in doing this?

Ingredients / Nugget/Amarillo hop combo
« on: September 09, 2010, 03:50:32 AM »
Any thoughts on this combo for an american amber?  I've got the malts down (and not really looking to change them):
80% Maris Otter
15% Honey Malt
5% Crystal 60
a touch of choc wheat

what I used the first time for this beer:
.5oz nugget 60min
.5oz hallertau 40min
.5oz riwaka 30min
1.5oz riwaka 1min
.5oz amarillo dry
.5oz simcoe dry
.25oz perle dry
.33oz sterling dry

my buddy is not quite the hop lover I am and am thinking of this:
.5oz nugget 60min
.5oz amarillo 15min
.5oz nugget 0min
.5oz amarillo 0min

5gal batch

Opinions?  I had also thought of northern brewer or willamette, but I like nugget and I like amarillo and think the combo would be nice.  Anyone tried the nugget/amarillo combo?

Zymurgy / Thanks Zymurgy

I was thrilled to see my homebrew label on page 10.

Definitely a double-take.  My wife had to restrain me after seeing that.  I was excited to see something of mine in my favorite magazine.

Thanks Zymurgy!! ;D

Events / GABF (a different sort of thread)
« on: August 19, 2010, 03:21:11 PM »
There's a lot of topics about tickets and such, but just curious what you all do for GABF as far as tasting.  What is your gameplan?  This will only be my third year (but I've gone every year that I have been legally able to).

My first was a total crapshoot.  I was completely un-prepared.  I had no gameplan and came out with a notebook of illegible scribbles.

Last year was a success.  I pinpointed certain breweries/brews I wanted to try and came out a winner with 127 checkmarks.

I don't know what I want to do this year.  I want to hit up some favorites that I don't have access to, but other than that I'm not sure if I want to go by style, breweries, whatever.

So, what gameplan do you all have??

Yeast and Fermentation / Wyeast 1214 dud?
« on: August 13, 2010, 02:56:43 PM »
Went to the lhbs and picked up ingredients for my belgian dubbel.  They didn't have WL500, so I opted for the wyeast 1214 since that's thought to be the chimay(ish) strain.  Got home, smacked it, shook it up.  A few hours go by, no swelling.  Hmm, that's odd.  Made a starter anyway, figuring surely it would be fine.  15 hours later, no sign of starter activity.  3oz dme in 1qt water.  1/4 tsp wyeast nutrient.  Cooled to 65 and pitched yeast.

Standard practice on making the starter.  Is this a phantom?  A dud?  Should I pitch the decanted starter anyway?  Pick up a new smack pack?

I can't say that I've seen such a wyeast product.  I've been happy with both white labs and wyeast in the past.

edit:  date on package was June 10.  I've had older...
