Beer Recipes / Re: Bourbon stout without a barrel
« on: June 30, 2014, 01:47:52 PM »
I bottle condition. In adding only a few ounces of booze to 5 gallons. Maybe raises the ABV by .1 % (I've done the math, but don't remember).

I did add half pack of dry champagne yeast at bottling as insurance.

Good to know!  I am lazy and didn't feel like doing even the quickest of math on it, but that makes sense for adding to a large batch.  I'll have to try this soon.  College football season is on the horizon and nothing says gameday like a little bourbon  ;)

Are you bottle conditioning these beers or putting them on gas?  I'm curious, because I was wondering if adding the higher alcohol bourbon would kill the yeast like brandy does in port wine?

I used to never floss, then some genius came up with Plackers and now I do it daily.  Agreed though, if you go a while without flossing then all of a sudden change your mind you will pluck some foul, evil stuff out of your teeth!

I like a nice chèvre but I'm really more of a Ford guy.

I thought about going to the corner store for some Fordy ounces, but then I thought better and cracked open a home brew

*damn, I should've gone to the second page before replying!

Watching Empire with the boys. Should have tried to watch all 6. Maybe next year.

Yeah, but for only watching 1 you're making the best choice!

Hop Growing / Re: 2014 hop gardens

That's awesome!  I really want to try my hand at growing hops, but I have 2 unfortunate factors working against me.  I'm in GA and I live in a townhome  :-\ I am hoping that my LHS still has rhizomes because I was at least going to do 2 in large pots on my back deck, but I have a feeling the heat is going to stress the crap out of them

I agree with gmac about not having bias while blind taste testing.  On the other hand, while an "off the shelf" sample seems the most legit for a commercial competition many get supplied by distributors or breweries themselves.  Even if they don't make special, small batches I'm sure they are giving the freshest brews to the competition.  That's a huge difference, especially for an ESB, which is a style that the average person would probably pass up on a store shelf and could easily have been a few months old the last time you tried it and have substantially reduced hop flavor compared to the fresh batch.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Consensus while judging?

Kuhnhenn's makes a creme brulee' stout that is a-maze-ing.
So does southern tier. It's somewhere around $10 a bomber. Too much for me to risk it.
It's well worth the $10.  A little on the sweet side, but fantastic for a nightcap
Agreed, great beer.  Sweet and strong, so it would be hard to drink 22 oz by yourself, that's why ...
bring a friend
;)

Luckily the wife enjoys beer as much as I do so we go splits on the bombers  ;)

Quite the tangent on a beer scoring thread

I had a Guinness with dinner.  That was the extent of my celebration.  I probably should've had the home brew coffee stout I have bottled, but was just feeling the lighter Guinness at the time

Going Pro / Re: So You Think You Want to Open a Brewery...

There are days that I'm too busy and have to push back homebrewing!  As cool as the idea has always seemed whilst drinking a homebrew you have to be all in and that takes a different kind of person.  Plus with all of the new breweries opening lately its just that much harder to make something distinctive.

I think my favorite was..

Dubbel: A-hole
Trippel: Bigger A-hole
Quad: Oddly, a really nice guy

 ;D ;D ;D

Definitely my favorite too.  I love strong Belgians and trippels the least, so I guess that's good for me

Favorite was when he was the dean in Orange County and they mistakenly gave him ecstasy.

"Sean, you are my same height. That is neat"

Sad

Love it for a later movie.  I wore out the VHS of Ghostbusters when I was a kid, then once I was old enough to understand a little more humor (and awesome naked breasts.......RIP John Candy on that note) Stripes!  "C'mon, rhythm! Hut, 2, 3, 4. Black guys help the white guys..."

The Pub / Re: 5 issues craft beer drinkers should be aware of

This brings to light a few things you don't normally think about.  I'll probably forward this on to my wife, who likes craft beer as much as me (hell...she bought me my original membership!).  The over consumption can definitely be a problem too.  Whether it's lunch or dinner you may think 2 beers with a meal is safe, but that catches up quickly.  I usually limit myself to 1 regardless of ABV, but that's more about cops in my area being a little crazy than actual safety.  The second (and third ;) ) are usually homebrews once I'm comfortable at home.

That is a pretty weak selection if you had to settle for Cold Snap.  I just had it in the Spring mix 12 pack and it was my least favorite.  Hopefully they don't delay you much longer and if they do hopefully there is a better airport bar or restaurant
