Going Pro / O2 Carbonation Stone Sizing
« on: June 11, 2013, 11:39:20 AM »
Looking at inline oxygenation system and trying to figure out which pore sizing for the stones is best. I'm thinking 0.5 micron is better than 2 micron since the bubbles will be smaller and dissolve quicker.  However, the inline system from morebeer.com includes a 2-micron stone, which is apparently not replaceable (at least not by them, according to their customer service).  Any thoughts?

Also, I'm brewing on a nano-nano system (10-gal). I have a Chugger pump I use for transferring from HLT to MLT.  Should I use a pump to transfer wort through plate chiller and oxygenation system, or will gravity work?

Thanks in advance!

Also, what should I oxygenate with?  Just ambient air using a pump, or pure "food grade" O2?  I read some posts about potential for over-oxygenating with straight O2, but apparently you can't with air mixture.

I think brewhouse view is important too. I can taste the mountain in my beer.

Sweet! What mountains?

Whoa! Sorry for your loss   :'(  I don't see why you couldn't do that.  Might be a bit tricky to get your IBUs and gravity figured out, but it's a lot better than topping off with water.  I suppose you could just chalk it up to pouring some out for your homies, but if you have the time and ingredients...why not?

Sounds like the epitome of homebrew to me!  8)

I believe that the aeration stone is placed AFTER the chiller as it is going into the fermenter so there would be very little back-pressure at that point.  Put a little pressure on the O2 line before you start and you will prevent backflow.

I'm sure the backflow would be minimal, but according to the instructions you are to run off half the wort before starting the O2.

And a check valve may do the trick.  Thanks Jimmy.

I wouldn't go lower than $1,000 starting offer, but that's just me.

Equipment and Software / Inline Aeration
« on: June 10, 2013, 11:39:44 AM »
I've recently made some upgrades in equipment.  Bought a Chugger SS pump and a Blichmann Therminator plate chiller.  I'm now looking into oxygenation choices, so I have a shorter lag time to drink.  I've was looking at this one and am curious as to its application and efficiency/ease-of-use.  I plan on chilling prior to aerating.  Should I pump the wort through the plate chiller at a low flow rate so I don't get backflow into the O2 line?  Also, is the 2-micron stone sufficient, or does anyone else have suggestions on a different inline system around the same price?

(BTW I know there are lots of threads on aeration, but I couldn't find something along these lines)

Thanks in advance.

Got mine today. Ordered the quick connects and ball valve too. Any advice to keep this thing operating well and keep from clogging?

All Grain Brewing / barley crusher gap settings ?
« on: June 04, 2013, 03:43:14 AM »
When I got mine I set it to .030" and I haven't changed it since. Overall efficiency runs 68-88% depending on gravity, but conversion efficiency is always >95% (assuming I get the pH right).

Same here. I left it at factory settings. Crush looks good and I don't have feeler gauges, so I didn't change it.

I bought the chugger. I'll let you know how it works for us. I also decided to buy a Blichmann Plate chiller as well. What tha hell!

Beer Recipes / Good Ale for BMC Drinkers
« on: May 31, 2013, 12:03:30 PM »
Thoughts on malts & hops for my BMC friends to ease them into craft beer?  I'd like to do an ale, since I only do ales and don't have a lager fridge.  Not sure what hops would be well suited for this style.  Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks!
