I think you would already know if your beer advanced by the scoresheet. Look at the "Place Awarded" box on the cover page. If there is a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd there, then you advanced...

Definitely a sad day. Love the Band. You ever have one of those moments with music that change you? Many of you have I'm sure.
After a loved one dies, you can hear songs again and it's like you are hearing them for the first time. I lost my mom 5 years ago. A couple weeks after she died, I heard "I Shall Be Released" one afternoon on my favorite radio station. I had to pull over because that moment, even though I've heard that song 1000 times, it just nailed me.
Probably going to happen later tonight as I brew and listen to nothin' but the Band...
RIP Levon. Throw one back with Betty...

i agree. my wife's nephew does this for a living on cell phone towers. watching this video, or as much as i could stomach, literally made me quesy. somebody's gotta do it, but sure ain't gonna be me!

umm... i think you mean Warminster MO. Pretty sure German Weyermann isn't making any Maris Otter?!?

all good points. however, i can't add my own sugar to non-fat condensed milk in this case. the dulce de leche is made by boiling the unopened can in water for 2 hours. at work, we take a case (6 #10 cans) and boil them in a 40gal steam kettle. at home i am making it with one small 14oz. can.  the tricky part is making sure you watch it and not let the water level go below the can.

since the fat will likely ruin head retention anyhow, i am sticking with regular sweetened condensed milk. only thing in the can is milk and sugar. you couldn't do this with unsweetened condensed milk, if there is such a thing. has to have the sugar in there.

at work our Pastry Chef makes caramel by boiling cans of sweetened condensed milk. it is very tasty. of course i am intrigued and want to brew with it. i am thinking it may add the proper lactic qualities, and some caramel sweetness, to a sweet stout. any thoughts? anyone ever try this?

i've done that too. no big deal. can't tell you exactly why, but likely because it is an acid based solution. it just reminded me that Star San only needs a 3 minute contact time to sanitize. soaking metal overnight turns stuff black. scrub it. some of it will come off.

Brown Porter going right now. I always brew on Ground Hog's Day. Sort of an homage to my roots. I grew up in Western PA, pert near Gobbler's Knob. I actually bottled my first ever brew on 2/2/99!! Looking at my notes today I see it turned out pretty good, hit my numbers before I even knew that was a goal! A stout extract kit that hit 1.011 FG. Not bad. Dry yeast.
 
APA on Saturday.

Maybe bottle or rack an experimental Maple Porter if I get bored with the SB commercials.
