General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Craft Beer and Alcoholism
« on: February 13, 2014, 01:09:26 PM »
The me, the issue is self control.  Can you walk away from a beer?  Do you feel you need to have a beer every day?  Do you take days off from drinking during the week?

Good points.  I think about those questions often.  I often times will not drink during the weekdays and then have a few on the weekend.  I think maintaining a sense of self control is important.  I also think of asking yourself "why am I drinking a beer?" is important.  I think for me, session beers may have a benefit in that when I do decide to have a beer on Saturday night, I might have some options under 6-7% which is not the case with my current pipeline.  Again, great article.

Great article and topic.  Thanks for sharing Denny.  I really need to start brewing some session brews.

Fantastic.  Thanks blatz for sharing the dunkel thread...lots of great information in there.  Here is the recipe that I decided to go with.  It is the exact recipe that Ron posted in the previously mentioned thread.  But I am brewing with a buddy so we are doing a 10 gallon batch.

14.5 lb Munich Dark
4 lb Pilsner
12 oz Carafa II
8 oz CaraMunich

2.50 Domestic Hallertau @ 60
.50 Domestic Hallertau @ 20

Doing a 90 minute boil.

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions and insights.  Greatly appreciated.

My mind went in the same direction too.    ;D

bahahaha....pasties (the correct spelling) would be a good option and/or a fish option.

Now...coming up with a vegan option with Michigan themed ingredients would be more difficult.  But my fingers are crossed.

Good to know.  West Michigan has a large German and Dutch it might be a good fit.  Also, it wouldn't be a Michigan dessert if it didn't highlight cherries.  ha. I am hungry and thirsty too udubdawg!

Just told my partner about SD next year.  She was pumped!  Also, since Michigan is home for us...(GR is where we went to college) we are excited to hopefully make the trip from CO back to MI for HBC.

Quick question about the Grand Banquet & Awards Ceremony.  Is this worth attending?  What is the general event like/for....obviously assuming it is an awards ceremony.  Is it worth for an average homebrewer and non-comp entry to attend?

Equipment and Software / Re: Brew Kettle cleaning question

Bar Keepers Friend works really well but not necessary every time.  PBW works great after brews for me.  Beer Stone is a calcium build up.

Equipment and Software / single tier vs. two tier brew structure
« on: January 21, 2014, 02:02:03 PM »
Alright...I have been thinking about this for months now.  As of recently, I have been planning for a 2 tier structure with the HLT and MT utilizing a pump and then gravity feeding into the BK.  I have began to get all the components necessary and then thought about direct fire MT with re-circ.  but then thought about the weird set up with having to pull from the side of the MT (due to gravity feeding the BK) into the pump then back up to the top of the MT.

So...then I started thinking about single tier.  To be honest though, I like the idea of only having one pump and would love to continue to batch sparge and control the mash out flow.

So, I am trying to gather opinions and really see if there is anything I am missing.  I am starting to keep myself up at night thinking about this.  ha.  Any suggestions or opinions on 2 tier or single tier?

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Where to order Pliny
« on: January 09, 2014, 09:40:00 AM »

he actually just pulled back from some farther flung accounts because he was at capacity and doesn't want to expand.

And that is another reason Pliny will continue to be on the list of best beers and pilgrimages to find/drink Pliny will continue.   Great beer and probably a smart decision in the craft beer world to really manage growth....but probably not an easy decision considering demand is ridiculously high for Russian River.

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Baby long is enough?!?
« on: January 09, 2014, 07:17:49 AM »
How long is enough is a personal situation question.  I have a 2.5 year old and a 2 month old.  I brewed 1 week after my most recent….but I started mashing in at 11 when everyone went to bed.  Not my most enjoyable brew day but it allowed me to get in a barrel project while not forgoing my family responsibilities.  I do think you should just ask.  Often it works out for me by saying "Hey, I would like to brew this weekend.  But lets make sure you get some time for yourself in the coming days".  Usually resulting in a shopping trip or her going to do some yoga.

Our midwife didn't drink beer…but I did brew my wife's favorite recipe so it was ready to go when baby was born and she was wanting a drink.

Congratulations on your upcoming birth!

The Pub / Re: New Year goals?

Like many other…I have to drop some weight.  Some other goals are to re-establish my meditation regiment, brew 1-3 lagers, build a brew structure and spend as much time with family as possible.

Cheers to 2014!

I made the jump after 3 extract batches.  I think there is lot to learn but one only really does that by making the move.  Do what is right for you and your wallet.
