General Homebrew Discussion / Best Compliment a brewer can get
« on: October 09, 2015, 07:48:04 PM »
I know folks enter competitions and there's some validation there, don't get me wrong. But the other day I had a friend of mine who thinks "dark beer" is anything darker than a pils. His mind was made up that dark beers taste bad, and are too heavy - he didn't like them at all.

After drinking my O'Fest beer for the first time last saturday, he stated he couldn't believe how smooth and easy drinking it was. He said he had never been able to drink "dark beer".

4 -1/2 liters later, I had converted him to craft beer several shades darker than pils!

That's a gold medal and great satisfaction achieved in my book.

Commercial Beer Reviews / Lagunitas Pils

Had this first time out in Chicago a week ago. I thought it was a pretty nice beer-clean crisp and definitely refreshing. I was easily drinking one and wanting/ordering another.

reviews seem to be kinda harsh for this beer.   I don't see it in my stores , wondering if its widely distributed.

Grabbed a sample before I cold crash this one. Apple is best taste I've picked up on in my cider. I boiled a gallon down this time , cooled and added the concentrated juice in. Final PH 3.43.

If there is 25g sucrose in 1oz of pure apple syrup, and I wanted to add enough to 5 gals of 1.000 cider to back sweeten to 1.008, what's the formula to figure this out?

General Homebrew Discussion / orange zest and bittering
« on: August 17, 2015, 10:20:46 PM »
made a summer wheat ale with 2 small oranges grated zest. 25IBU and it has a really nice orange smell and flavor to it - just what i was looking for.

questions came to mind though. would orange zest on its own in the right quantity serve as a similar bittering agent as hops? no idea just popped in my head and wonder if anyone has done it or if its feasible.
