Equipment and Software / Midwest Supply Plate Chiller or alternative
« on: April 13, 2013, 10:58:56 PM »
Anyone tried this item?  They have only 3 reviews on the site so I'm hoping a few people here have some experience with this or can recommend an alternative. I need to cool 32-33 gallons of wort and am willing to buy a pair of plate chillers if needed but cooling has to be fast.
Ideally I would like a gasketed PC but haven't found any that were reasonably sized/priced.

Beer Travel / Belgium 2010 52 beers, 7 days
« on: March 30, 2013, 01:32:34 AM »
Hands down the best vacation I have ever taken.  We spent 7 days in Brugge sampling the local brews and enjoying the people.  Many hours were spent at Cambrinus a pub with 403 beers and a book 10" thick to tell you about them.  We took a cruise in 2009 and this was one of the stops.  We were there for 4 hours and I didn't want to leave. So we went back and spent a week there before heading to Paris. While we were there we toured the last working brewery in the city walls.  They make the Brugge Zot light and dark and the Straffe Hendrick there.  So much old copper brewing equipment just laying around there.  Hundreds of bottles on display and a different glass for every one of them.

Pimp My System / 1 BBL garage system with automation
« on: March 29, 2013, 04:37:33 PM »
Hey guys, new to the boards and just spotted the Pimp My System forum.  I've been working on this system for a while now and thought I'd share.

This 31 gallon system is made up of tanks from Stout Tanks in Portland and the automation was done by Brewmation in NY.  Originally it arrived from Brewmation on this black brewing platform which I built the pallet for and the panel stand:

After brewing on this one time and doing 6 hours of cleanup I realized that wasn't going to work for me so I had a friend put this aluminum stand together for me and it arrived last Friday.  I spent the next two days moving things over and just ran a water batch through last night to test everything out.  So far, so good.

Now I'm working on getting the brite tanks set up and the CO2 system installed in a 74cu foot roll in commercial fridge.  I have two 1BBL tanks and 12 6th BBL commercial kegs.  4 taps.

The touchscreen allows for recipe input and temperature trending.  The strike pump has a flow meter to measure out the strike water and then the operators screen lets me turn on and off pumps and heaters with a touch.

As I said it's a work in progress and I'm still learning.  The transition from 5gal to 31 is a learning curve but aside from the nasty cleanup job the first time the whole project has been a lot of fun.

Sorry, lame hosting provider insists these are the correct orientation..

This is an 80gal but I have a 55gal on order as well

Equipment and Software / Must PRVs be mounted vertically?
« on: March 29, 2013, 03:16:39 PM »
Hi.  I just received a pair of GWKent PRVs with 1.5"TC and discovered the outlets on the top of my brite beer tanks are 1". Long story, but since this means using a reducer can anyone tell me if these must be mounted vertical or can I elbow from the 1" to a reducer and mount the PRVs at 90 degrees?  I have a space problem above the tanks and this would save me a lot of work.  Thanks in advance.
