General Homebrew Discussion / Baby Hiatus...how long is enough?!?

Need some advice from brewers who are Dads of >2.  Baby #3 is coming in Feb and I’m certain that this will cause me to go on hiatus from brewing for a few months.  Question…when is it the right time to come back into brewing without me getting into some serious trouble.  My wife is very understanding of my brewing and allows me to be at the craft most weekends, so it’s possible to start early, but I don’t want to push my luck.  I’ve been a brewer for 10 years, but really hard-at-it (all grain) for 2.  Help!

All Grain Brewing / Lbs in a barley wine...how much?

I was considering 17 lbs of base and 1 of mixed caramel & choc. Is this overkill? It's my 1st try at it, so I wanted to check. Also, how long to ferment... Month?

Yeast and Fermentation / Starter "fuel" for Champagne Yeast

I'm making a mead this weekend and I'd like to do a starter this time around like I do my homebrews.  What would be the best food/fuel to use as a starter for the Champagne Yeast?  Honey(plus nutrient)?  a Little corn-sugar? I'm assuming no DME.
A little advise please...thanks!

I have a keggerator for a standard keg that I'd like to set-up/convert to a Pinlock or a Balllock keg.  I have the idea that simply changing out some fittings would do the trick, however I wanted to make sure I wasn't under-thinking it.

Equipment and Software / Grain Mill Recommendation

Looking for a grain mill on a tight budget.  I've been getting by with taking my bulk grains to a friend for grinding for about a year and I need a little freedom, but I don't want to pay $130 for one off a Home brew supply website...any ideas?  DIY?

Yeast and Fermentation / Beer Yeast for Bread?

Has anyone ever used the (washed) liquid yeast from a secondary fermenter to make bread?  I just harvested the yeast from my latest batch(IPA) and was toying with the idea of making bread with it(actually, asking my wife to do it).  Anyone have any experience doing this?

Zymurgy / Shipping Woes...need a good alternative

In the Dear Zymurgy section of this month's journal, one of the writers talks about shipping with UPS or FedEx and using the identifier for what he is shipping as "yeast samples packed in glass".  Looking on the FedEx website, they list under Prohibited Items that "Biological Products."  Question: What's a good alternative identifier for my "product?"

Yeast and Fermentation / "Chunky" fermentation?

I put my APA in Primary yesterday...seeing some unusual activity...got what looks like chunks of yeast floating up and down...never seen that before.  I brewed this beer the same way a month ago and didn't get this action.
Any ideas? Not sure if its something to get torqued about.

Ingredients / American Spice - Complement to citrus

I'm working on a new APA recipe and I was looking for a spice that would complement the citrusy flavor of the beer.  Not planning to use any fruit...just cascade hops and about 5 - 10% wheat in the bill.
Any suggestions?

Yeast and Fermentation / ~40 gallon plastic coke barrels

My wife procured several a coke barrels from my local coke bottler for rain collection.  She brought home a skinny one that I was considering to steal and use as a primary fermenter(with a few mods).  It smells like Sprite, so I figured I would fill it with water in the sun for a few days to soak the residual flavor out.  Questions are: will soaking work to remove the favor?  If not what will?

Doing an APA today...no extract(big deal for me).  Been brewing offandon since '01, but it's been mixed steeping grains and extract.

Here's what I'm using(thanks to BrewMatersWarehouse in ATL):
7 lbs Briess 2-Row Brewer's Malt
2 lbs Weyermann Munich Type II
1/2 lbs Briess 2 Row Caramel 10
1/2 lbs Briess White Wheat
4 oz of Cascade

Going to step mash...wish an all-grain rookie luck!

In the latest edition of zymurgy, there was an article called nanomashing...has anyone tired this?  Sounds like a good idea, but I'm new to writing my own grain bill so I wanted to ask.  I'm trying to develop a "flagship" APA.

Pimp My System / Speidel Braumeister...anyone have one?

I've been casually looking to upgrade my cooler mashing process for the last few months and came across the Speidel Braumeister system.  From what I've seen of the custom systems that people smarter than I have put together, these machines would not be that dramatically move expensive.  Has anyone purchased one of these or heard of someone who has?  If so, how do ya'll/they like it?  Worth the dough?

General Homebrew Discussion / New Hop yard...any advice?

I got 3 cascade rhizomes ready for planting today.  I've read a book on the subject and feel pretty comfortable with the process: Planting them horizontally in hills, lots of compost, setting up a tent trestle, etc.  Does anyone have any last minute tips or best practices?  Anything would be helpful.
