Zymurgy / Shipping Woes...need a good alternative
« on: July 21, 2013, 06:21:03 AM »
In the Dear Zymurgy section of this month's journal, one of the writers talks about shipping with UPS or FedEx and using the identifier for what he is shipping as "yeast samples packed in glass".  Looking on the FedEx website, they list under Prohibited Items that "Biological Products."  Question: What's a good alternative identifier for my "product?"

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Best Beers You Ever Brewed?

My best brew was a Dopple dark Heffe...used about 2 cups of honey and added raspberries and blackberries...nailed it.  Tasted like Purple Haze's big brother.  Did it in '03 when I first started brewing and didn't know crap about the process...just threw stuff in the brew pot.

Sorry for your loss...recently lost a grand parent...never easy stuff.

I moved to NYC in '07 and didn't have space for my equipment.  Add one baby and a financial down turn and you have time off from brewing.  We moved back south (little more space) and i started back with a few extract brews.  Once we got a house(little more space) I had a place to put the equipment...been back in the all grain saddle.

White Labs CA ale yeast for my 1st custom grain bill APA.
She's still at full-throttle with a nice two inch head.
Yeah, it's like watching a campfire...hard to turn away from it.  I gave serious consideration about calling-in to work today.

Yeast and Fermentation / "Chunky" fermentation?
« on: June 23, 2013, 07:25:10 PM »
I put my APA in Primary yesterday...seeing some unusual what looks like chunks of yeast floating up and down...never seen that before.  I brewed this beer the same way a month ago and didn't get this action.
Any ideas? Not sure if its something to get torqued about.

General Homebrew Discussion / What's brewing today?

Wanted to see who's brewing what.
I'm doing an APA based on the nanomashing I did last weekend. Nothing too fancy, just trying to find the right grain combination to call my own.

I heard good things about Williamette? I read an article a week or so ago that recommended it for APA/IPA

Final update...turned out great!
Good head retention, citrusy, hoppy, no aftertaste...a model APA!  I know I was suppose to wait 10 days to try, but I couldn't resist.
Thanks again for the support

Bottled...used a little more than 1/2 cup of corn sugar...flip tops...still tastes good.
I'll report again in ~10 days.

Ingredients / Re: American Spice - Complement to citrus
« on: June 07, 2013, 02:44:25 AM »
Thanks for the suggestions...I was mainly looking to add a layer of complexity, adding only a small amount to the wort.  I like the coriander idea, but I'll test them all.
Thanks again

Ingredients / American Spice - Complement to citrus
« on: June 06, 2013, 06:38:25 PM »
I'm working on a new APA recipe and I was looking for a spice that would complement the citrusy flavor of the beer.  Not planning to use any fruit...just cascade hops and about 5 - 10% wheat in the bill.
Any suggestions?

Racked into 2nd ferm today...smells signs of off favors...just hoppy and citrusy
It's a little cloudy, but if that's the only thing wrong, I'll be smile'n in two weeks

It's a plastic barrel...I like the baking soda idea...I've had some success with it previously as a safe soap additive.  If the doesn't work, I'll go for the oxyclean
