Homebrew Competitions / Re: BJCP moving up the ranks question
« on: May 02, 2014, 01:58:10 PM »
That's a nice chart. I keep reading all over BJCP that apprentice is disappearing, but they don't seem to actually be making it disappear.

well, what people keep telling me is that nobody fails anymore, so I suppose if that were true then Apprentice would disappear.

Though I did grade one exam in 2013 that did not pass.

Commercial Beer Reviews / Re: Utopias
« on: April 30, 2014, 01:49:14 PM »
my friend's review of Utopias was "a rabid alcohol-soaked rat clawing its way down my throat"

...I don't think it's that bad - basically the rat isn't rabid - but it's definitely not my thing.

KS bill signed April 17th and published and official April 24th.  For the last 4 days we've finally been able to legally remove beer/wine/cider from the home and give it to others beyond immediate family.  We can legally hold a competition now too.

I'd like to thank the AHA for their help, the Kansas Homebrewers Alliance, people all over the state who talked to their representatives to educate them, and with a special shout-out to Steve Cook, who spearheaded this effort.

Thanks. I'm pretty happy with that. 38 may not wow some people but I know what it means. Especially if you look at the judge article in this month's Zymurgy

38.5 is a damn good score and very good for anyone's first comp effort.  Plenty of beers moved on with this score or below; you're not far off at all.

Ha!  "Thaaaanks Amy" is a peach cider at my house.  Does she know she's famous?

won't let me edit my entries to enter the recipes yet, but I didn't wanna type all that right now anyway.  Will check back next week.   8)

I want to work less, make more money and have nearly zero responsibility. Opening a commercial brewery sounds like the opposite of that.

I finally have an answer to this tiring question, thanks.   ;D

Governor signed bill yesterday.  It'll be weeks before it gets published and becomes official, but very soon I'll have to find some different laws to break.  8)

7400 entries and 712 IPAs in the book, as we all glare at Chicago.  ;)

a lot of great brewers through to the Finals so far.  Some Ninkasi tiebreakers seem likely.  Somewhere around 150 people so far with multiple entries advancing, but haven't found anyone with more than 3.

another <700 region and another <600 region has us on pace for exactly 8000 entries.

Startlingly low cider numbers from Seattle, to me at least.  Maybe they all shipped to Denver to avoid each other?   ;)

mead numbers are low everywhere, with melomel accounting for almost half.  maybe St Paul will prop the numbers up a bit.

Wide shot - Two 3-tier plant stands with grow lights, and DIY germination mats up on top.

really nice setup.  Something similar took over my dining room and portions of my basement during the neverending winter of 2013...I'll probably do it again next year.
