The Pub / Re: Sharing small joys
« on: August 15, 2011, 05:22:15 AM »
We've have a rather wet summer here, but this weekend was sunny & dry, so we tried to make the most of it as a family.

Friday - picked my daughter up from the final day of Outdoor Survival Camp (where it rained most of the week).  It was my wife's birthday, so I made Beef Wellington at her request (& it turned out awesome).

Satruday - took the family to the Dieppe International Kite Festival (that's Dieppe New Brunswick).  Saw some cool kites, but spent most of our time on the midway.  Took my son on the superslide and my daughter on the ferris wheel (finally, there is someone in this family who's not afraid of heights and will do stuff with Dad!  My son is not yet 3, so I'll give him a pass for now).  Spent the evening with friends we haven't seen in months.

Sunday - took the wife and kids to spend the afternoon with their grandmother/great grandmother for National Acadian Day Edit: just checked that link - modern celebrations are more like this.

PS - Guides & Scouts in Canada have reworked their pledges & mottos to remove the religious references.  Tom, you might be able to find a troup that does the same.  I won't be surprised if my duaghter wants to jump over to Scouts from Guides as they seem to do more hands-on outdoor stuff.

As long as its a closed fermenter, you should be fine, but I would take hokerer's advice and do at least 3 to 3.5 gallons.

In all seriousness, if you have the ability to move out of the US and start the brewery, I would recommend it, for no other reason than to avoid the archaic alcohol regulations that you have to deal with over there.

Just don't move north.  Our regulations are worse in Canada.

I'm sure wikipedia could help me out, but...independence from whom?

Independence from the Reinheitsgebot of course!   ;D

... and a good crossover style for BMC drinkers who swear they "don't like craft beer".

As far as commercial examples, a lot of brew pubs have them on as their gateway beer.

+1
That's why I call mine Tor Kolsch  ;)  (German for Gateway - at least according to Google Translate)

If you can legally brew at home and sell it, why not find a couple of bars and/or restoraunts that are not under contract to a brewery and supply them with a keg or two.  Develop a reputation and brand recogintion and go from there.  No mortgage, no restoraunt to manage and you could probably do it with the Sabco system and a bunch of fementers.

I would guess (and that's all it is - a guess) that if you take a rhizome and transplant it, its a first year plant.  It has to rebuild its root structure and get established in its new location.  I suppose that the larger the piece you transplant, the quicker it will re-establish itself.

Thanks everyone.  I just wanted to know what you think because I was considering taking some bottles to a CABA event next week but now I have to work anyway so that's not gonna happen.

Just send them in anyway - you don't have to be there, just your beer.  I sent in 3 entries, but I'm certainly not making the 17+ hour drive just for the awards ceremony.  I just want the judging sheets (though I'd happily accept any prizes or medals).
