General Homebrew Discussion / Partial Mash As a First Step To All Grain
« on: January 20, 2010, 11:32:48 AM »
It may sound somewhat timid but I am considering trying several partial mash recipes prior to jumping into all grain.  I have read Chris Colby's article "Countertop Partial Mashing" which appeared in the October 2006 issue of BYO.  Has anyone tried this approach?  Is there another process I should try?  Thanks.

Extract/Partial Mash Brewing / Locating English Pale Malt Extract
« on: November 22, 2009, 10:59:11 AM »
I plan on making Jamil Zainasheff's ESB-Programmer's Elbow.  He specifically mentions English Pale Malt Extract.  There has been much discussion on the web regarding this.  I have seen maris otter extract mentioned but find it difficult to locate.  Would Munton & Fison Light extract suffice?  Also with cans providing 3.3 lbs what are others doing to get to 8.6 lbs.

Thanks.

Yeast and Fermentation / Fermentation and High OG
« on: November 15, 2009, 09:03:09 AM »
First off thanks to everyone who responded to my posts/questions regarding foam stoppers and OG of a starter.  Yesterday, I brewed a "Double IPA"-Extract/Specialty grain recipe.  I miscalculated water additions and ended up with 5.5 to 6 gallons of wort-OG was 1.074.  I racked into the fermentation bucket allowing quite a bit of splashing (racked at 65 degrees).  I then used an O2 canister and stone-three times for about 10 to 15 seconds each-swirling the stone around the bottom via the stainless steel tube.  I then pitched my 1500ml of starter and another fully puffed out pack of Wyeast 1056.  FYI-the starter was created the day prior using a way too high OG starter of 1.065 and a stir plate.  It is now the 16 hours later-early I know but no activity in the Airlock.  The lid is sealed tight, the inside part of the airlock is pushed up.  Should I have any concerns? Thanks-

General Homebrew Discussion / Starter's OG
« on: November 13, 2009, 06:37:42 PM »
Okay guys-I have already received invaluable information from you.  I once again need your input.  I have made a starter-Brix was about 16 or 1.064.  I will be brewing a double IPA of about 1.083 OG.  Now I am reading that starters should only be about 1.030 to 1.040.  Should I toss this and simply buy two smack packs tomorrow?

Additional info:  put pure O2 in for about 5 to 10 seconds, hand shook and placed on a starter plate.  By they way, I took everyone's advice and simply place aluminum foil on top of the flask.  I am using Wyeast 1056.

This newbie truly appreciates the information provided by all of you.

General Homebrew Discussion / Foam Stopper-Starter
« on: November 12, 2009, 06:09:11 PM »
I will be making my first starter (for an Imperial IPA).  I have a stir plate and a 2L flask.  My question is how do I sterilize the foam stopper for the flask?  Should I put it in no rinse sanitizer?

Thanks in advance.
