General Homebrew Discussion / Froze my beer.
« on: August 02, 2014, 05:44:01 PM »
My kegerator froze my beer the other day. Can beer survived just fine. Bottle beer were foaming thu the cap and needed to consumed soon. Beer in keg also froze and now I have ice oatmeal stout.

One of the thing is that favors are still more concentrated and head retention is incredible. It is like on nitro.

Going Pro / FDA and spend grain
« on: April 30, 2014, 04:46:04 PM »
There is more to it but:

"
Would there be any exemptions?

Yes, as proposed, very small businesses, which could include local and craft brewers, would be exempt from the written food safety plan requirement. FDA sought comment on three possible definitions of very small businesses, ranging from having less than $500,000 of total annual sales of animal food to less than $2.5 million of total annual sales of animal food. Because the exemption is based on sales, companies that donate a byproduct rather than sell it likely would qualify for the very small business exemption."

Going Pro / Super CIP
« on: April 11, 2014, 07:25:07 AM »
I have to admit that this is most challenging area I have encounter so far.
Every manufacturer has different chemicals and they are hard to compare (I am not a chemist).
If you have BT in walking cooler you need to use different chemicals then on fermenters and you might need to use another chemicals in BK and hot side equipment.

I have found my cleaner after 4 years for BK and hot side equipment.

I started with PBW then HD Caustic 2 to StarLine.
They all clean to some extend.
Some of them required long soaking to be effective (PBW)
Some of then required higher concentration (HD Caustic 2)
and  Star Line is really design for low temp cleaning and not that effective at all.

So I got me Supper CIP.
160F at 1 oz per gallon and stuff is shiny again.

For my BK in walking cooler I use mostly acid.
If I want to use Alkaline cleaner there I use StarLine.

These are all from Five Star Chemicals.
What is your experience with cleaners and what do you use?

The Pub / Old story but still interesting.
« on: August 11, 2013, 03:42:01 PM »
I was not aware that both Midwest Supply and Northern Brewer have new investors.
http://m.bizjournals.com/twincities/print-edition/2011/11/11/home-brewery-suppliers-land-investment.html?page=all&r=full

I recently have met a few people that used to work for Northen brewer and then did the search.
So homebrewing supply stores are changing and attracting investors.
No more LHBS anymore?

Going Pro / Ladys and Gentleman. They have arrived.
« on: July 01, 2013, 06:18:44 PM »

Here they are. All 8 pallets plus one pallet of lids.
This was a first time I got sealed trailer. And it was all for me :)

Then in the afternoon I checked the filler and seamer and seamed first empty can.
I think it should work just fine.

Beer is in the bright tank and we should be filing some cans at the end of the week.
Wish me luck.  ;)
