All Things Food / Re: Advice for getting a smoker
« on: September 07, 2012, 07:07:14 AM »
Building my own from a drum was something I seriously considered, but burning out the lining would be impossible in the City (or, more accurately, would really piss off my neighbors).

With the help of a metal shop and a welder, I converted a 22" Weber into a smoker.  If you google "thunderbelly" you'll get images of what mine looks like.  I smoked about 20lbs of pork shoulder last weekend and it was awesome.

I also seriously considered getting a barrel smoker (like a Chargriller or whatever) and modifying it, but the way I went was easier.

Definitely get a smoker.

You get me Bears/Packers tickets and I will make you foie gras poutine at the tailgate.

I used to get 'em every year.  But that was back at old Soldier Field.  I haven't gone to a game since my kids were born.

Is it bottled?  Or is it still in the carboy?  If so, have you pulled a sample?

It often looks darker than it really is in the carboy after the yeast drops out.

As I think about this, I've read lots of wine reviews that say "flavors of tobacco" along with other things like leather that you would never actually put in the wine.

Perhaps the flavors come from the oak?  There's probably ways to get a similar flavor without actually adding tobacco.

As far as tobacco spit, I've seen people drink it by mistake... nasty.  Do not spit your dip into an empty beer bottle.

Phil,  I think you're speaking French.  Please try again in English.

This, I understand.  Do you accept 3rd party checks?

No, but you can buy me some Bears tickets. Or rather, for $500, I should say Bears ticket.

Last time I bought 'em they were $75 face value.  But that was a few years ago.  Regardless, $500 should get you some nice seats.  December?  Packers?  Bring your coveralls.

Have you ever chewed tobacco?  It's not something you want to be swallowing.

IMO, tobacco beer = nasty.

I'd rather smoke that cigar and sip a nice old ale, stout or dopplebock.  Or bourbon.

For whatever reason it looks like PHP's SESSION_ID is getting concatenated to the dl query string, and appears to be invalid. I would suggest not including the sessionid in the string.

Maybe I need to try again, but I've not been too keen on the rye beers I've tried/brewed.

Rye in a Manhattan, on the other hand...

Also, IME, Nugget can be harshly bitter.

Keith - I've got three of these scattered throughout my house: http://www.amazon.com/RCA-DTA-800B1-Digital-Pass-through-Converter/dp/B001DT5LII/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1346875536&sr=1-1&keywords=rca+digital+tuner

Relatively cheap and they work great.  Remote is programmable to work your TV.

I dumped Direct TV and went with a Roku and an AppleTV plus broadcast.  Streaming Netflix has everything I need to see that isn't local news or sports.

Besides the initial cost for the Roku unit how much does it cost to run the unit? Netflix costs $8/mo...

All I pay for is Netflix.  You could also do Amazon streaming, or Hulu, but I haven't had the need.  If you add enough services, it could cost as much as cable.

Roku has Pandora radio, so I've got streaming music.  Plus you can add "channels" (apps, basically) and I added one that will pick my iTunes library off my server.

The savings from not paying DirecTV has already paid for the Roku and the AppleTV.  They both have positives, but overall I like the Roku better.

I haven't been able to see others but i can see mine.

On this ipad on this thread yours is also the only one I see.

Mine is the only one I do not see.  At least on this thread, for sure.  Pretty sure on all others but not willing to invest the time to check all other threads.  At the least, there have been avatars on the threads I have checked.
