Yeast and Fermentation / Re: Air Lock Drips Vodka Into Fermenting IPA
« on: September 10, 2010, 10:06:34 PM »
I don't think it's the vodka at all.  Even assuming you dumped 4 ounces of 100 proof vodka into 5 gallons, you've got 640 ounces of beer, and you added 4*50%/640, that's less than 0.33% ABV added to your beer.

But the vodka was probably 40%, it was probably less than 4 ounces, and you probably have more than 5 gallons in that 14.5 gallon fermenter.  So I think it's probably more like 0.1% ABV added.  If it tastes alcoholic, I think it is more likely from the 72F fermentation temp or the huge attenuation.

Funny that this topic was started by a guy who said this (my emphasis):

I've always thought that it did add a slight honey taste to the beer, but I really wonder how much of that is psychological.  I've done enough study of how preconceptions effect perception to be skeptical of my own tastings when it isn't done blind.  And I haven't done that with honey malt.

Maybe they need to change that pie chart to include audio post production types . . .  ;D

I was an English major in college, and that's one I still get wrong almost every time!
I usually ask myself, if I change the word to "create" or "change", which one makes more sense?  Are you creating perception or changing perception?  Change is affect, create is effect.

It might not work in all sentences, but it's easy to remember which is which - affect has a C in it, and change starts with C.   ;) ;D

I never mess those up when I'm writing, but when I'm typing I do it all of the time.  Obviously my hand knows the difference, my fingers don't. :)

That should never be a problem if you're willing to pay up front.

That was my thought - My business is in the same boat, ut I can't see them refusing cash up front. Minumum orders might be the only issue, but if the prices are good enough maybe it's time to diversify your business a little.
Or at least get a few club members together for an order, it looks like you're in VT enso, there must be people around who'd like to place an order too.

That's awesome, want to trade for some kegs?  ;D

Well, I do have my own business already actually.  I thought about that.  Just was not sure if they require minimum purchase amounts or anything like that.  Plus, if they check my finances, they will find my business is not exactly lucrative so far.   :-\

Just so happens there's a thread going on now at Probrewer.com about this same (lack of) customer service issue at St. Pat's!! ;D

Can a leopard change its spots?
I don't know about that, but a tiger can change it's stripes . . .

Hmmm . . . not working, apparently flickr doesn't like it.

I don't know why, but if you have a google account you can use picasweb, it works for me.

Just put [ img ]www.yourpics.blahblah[ /img ] (without the spaces) around the url of the pic.

Or click the img icon and it will put the tags in for you, then paste the url in between them.  Or highlight the url and hit the img button.

BTW: OUCH!!!
Wow, that's pretty harsh.  I watched the second half and I'm not saying the guy is wrong in his assessment of the way they played, but it wasn't all Favre.  After the mistakes NO made (two missed FGs) they were still in the game, so how about a D that can get the ball back for a last minute drive instead of letting NO run out the clock?

No. But if he was I'd be proud.  ;) It' his first year and he plays on the kick off team and free saftey, but as a sub. He actually got to play 10 or 12 downs last night and made 2 tackles and almost picked off a pass. It was great.
Awesome!  Playing like that he might get in the game more often. :)

I'm hoping if my son decides to play he'll want to be a kicker - less chance of a head injury.

Huh.  I didn't know it was used as a dye, and in medicine?!  That seems  . . . interesting for something that you should wash your hands after handling.  Although one of the cranky old scientists I work with likes to tell everyone that they used to inject people with ethidium bromide while he's bare-handing gels, to which I always reply that they used to bleed people too.

And to save people from having to look it up, we use ethidium bromide to mutagenize yeast and it is used in gels because it is a fluorescent DNA intercalator, so you look at it under UV and you can see where the DNA is on the gel.  But uh . . . that means it sticks itself into DNA and is not picky about what DNA, so while it might not penetrate your skin it still seems like a really bad idea to handle it if you don't have to, especially if you have any cuts.  Everyone else wears gloves.

Hop identification can be really tough.  Do you have any way of contacting the old owner to ask?  That's your best bet for a cheap and easy positive identification, otherwise you're really just guessing.
