I just found this priming sugar calculator at Northern Brewer. It gives custom weights and volumes for many different sugars.

There was a young man who loved Pabst
He drank it until he collapsed
He gave up beer
For Lent every year
And on Easter morning, relapsed.

Homebrew Competitions / NHC Lottery Limbo
« on: February 12, 2014, 06:12:45 PM »
I know the plan is to notify entrants not picked in the lottery next week, after selecting some of them to fill unpaid spots. I think this plan is causing a bit of stress by leaving some contestants in limbo. They know emails have gone out, they don't know if they all went out, and they're being left to slooooowly come to the realization that they didn't get in.

I think it would be better/kinder/more humane to let the unlucky ones know for sure what their status is. They can be reminded that they might get another chance if some don't pay. It won't make the news better, but at least they won't be left in agony wondering.

Questions about the forum? / AHA Forum Ticker on HomebrewersAssociation.org
« on: February 11, 2014, 02:28:39 PM »
I was just at the AHA main page and clicked a new forum post from the feed. Then I got a message that it was off limits. Tried again with a second. Topics = "Supplies for 2014 competition sites" and "Problems Logging in to the comp software". I assume these are in admin boards and shouldn't be showing up on the feed. Probably want to fix that.

Ingredients / Wheat varieties
« on: January 31, 2014, 06:48:05 AM »
Anyone know what kind of raw wheat is preferred for brewing? Homebrew shops usually have wheat berries labeled white and red. But my local baking shop has red and white, winter and spring, hard and soft. For baking, hard spring has the highest protein (gluten) and usually becomes bread flour. Hard winter has lower protein, usually becomes all purpose flour. Soft wheat is cake and pastry flour. Red vs white affects flavor and color more than protein I believe.

Anyone know which is preferred for brewing?

I just got an email that looked identical to the AHA Forum new topic notification emails. It contained the normal links, but they were to bogus versions of the website. I'm sure the goal is try get you to try to log in on the bogus site, at which point they can log in here and post spam.

The message was completely off topic, which should help you recognize it - Selecting a hairstyle for a wedding. But the look is identical.

I'd be happy to forward the message to AHA IT if they want to see it. Just send me an address.

And no I didn't compromise my account.

Also, I realize this is probably a 'Forum Admin' thread, but I thought more would see the warning here. Feel free to move this and smack my hands.

General Homebrew Discussion / Beer with Strangers Podcast
« on: January 17, 2014, 07:01:30 AM »
A local guy started a weekly brewing podcast that is recorded at our LHBS and had me on yesterday. It was pretty cool. The shop owner, Doug, helped Dogfish get started back when they were brewing on a wee sabco.

General Homebrew Discussion / Maybe I'll try a kit!
« on: December 09, 2013, 12:51:41 PM »
No really. We were at Goodwill and they had a Mr Beer kit. I've heard from so many that this was their first homebrew and it was horrible.  I checked and the extract has a year before the use by date, and it was only $5. I thought it would be fun to see what two experienced homebrewers get out of one of these kits. Anyone else try a Mr Beer kit lately?

Questions about the forum? / homebrewersassociation.org login
« on: December 09, 2013, 08:11:17 AM »
Anyone having trouble logging in the morning (main site, not forum ... obviously that's working). I'm trying to get on eZymurgy and the login isn't working. I enter my name, PW, click Log In, and the page does nothing at all.

My friend Kevin is opening Chester River Brewing Company in Chestertown, MD and has an entry in the Startup Maryland competition. All you need to do to help him out is watch his pitch video, which is here. He's a great guy, member of my club, and also a tour guide at Fordham Brewing Company. He's been working for over a year to change local zoning rules which prohibited him from opening in his county.
