My club has been doing something similar for a few years now called "Iron Buddy Brew" as a way for brewers who are newer to the club to pair up with club veterans. The teams collaborate and come up with a brew that must incorporate 3 of 10 ingredients drawn randomly from a hat. Ingredients range from wood to breakfast cereal to cookies to spices.

This year we had to incorporate three or more of the following: cumin, Rice Krispy treats, oranges/orange peel, pomegranate juice, cherries, maple syrup, zingers, doughnuts, nutmeg, or raspberries.

We're having our annual Iron Buddy Brew Challenge Thursday at our meeting. I'll post back what crazy s**t people came up with.

Here's a link to the list of possible ingredients we used: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1329979/rhbc/Iron_Buddy_Brew_Ingredients.pdf

Homebrew Competitions / Re: NHC Final round Competition Labels

Also, my labels don't have a bar code, just a big empty box in the middle.

Stephen, if your barcode is not showing up, make sure your browser is not blocking images for some reason (as Jimmy suggests). If you are still having trouble PM me and we'll try to figure out a solution.

What does Mini-BOS being checked mean on the online entry page?

It means that your entry was part of what's called a "mini best of show" at the table where your beer was judged. At the NHC, that constituted the BJCP category it was entered into.

A mini best of show is a pool of the "best" entries each judge team chooses. From this "pool," the entries are judged in the same manner as the competition's overall best of show round - no Scoresheet is filled out for them typically.

For example, let's say there are 40 entries at the table and four pairs of judges working their way through them. Each judge pair is usually instructed by the head judge that they can advance a certain number of entries to the mini-BOS - the judges certainly do not have to advance any to a mini-BOS if they do not feel any they judged are worthy.

Let's say each judge pair sends three entries, so there are 12 entries in the mini-BOS pool. Two or more (preferably BJCP ranked) judges then evaluate each of the 12, choosing the first, second, and third place entries after discussion and debate.

Note that making it to the mini-BOS does not mean that an entry placed, it simply means that the entry stood out as a contender to place.

See http://www.bjcp.org/docs/MiniBOS.pdf for a more in-depth explanation.

Homebrew Competitions / Re: Judging at 2nd round NHC

I'm in the same boat as the OP (Recognized with 1 pt).  I tried to register with no luck.  Is it to late to volunteer?  I was hoping to steward at the very least.

Mike,

Try this link to register to be a judge or steward at the Final Round: http://www.brewingcompetition.com/final/index.php?section=register&go=judge

I just tested it and it's working fine.

Events / Re: Have your NHC entries been wiped out?
« on: March 12, 2013, 07:21:05 AM »
this is related to today's events...

i was able to add 3 entries at Milwaukee before it closed/filled, but now when I login, it shows no entries.  anyone else have the same issue?

A message on my list of entries page says: If you notice any issues with your entry(s), please contact AHA Member Services at info@brewersassociation.org. I'd do just that.

Existing entries are still there and are now available after you log in. The original programming did not allow for people to see any entries, because most comps don't shut down and re-open. They simply open and stay open until their entry max is reached or their registration end date passes.

All is good now. Log in and you'll see your entries (if you already had some).

Events / Re: NHC 2013 Entry Problems - Possible Solutions?
« on: February 28, 2013, 10:23:01 AM »
As the "random guy in Colorado" I don't feel any need to defend myself or the software. The 100s of competitions that are using or have used this OPEN SOURCE and FREE software are more testament to its success than the issues experienced with the NHC registration on Tuesday.

I was honored that the AHA wanted to use the software for the NHC. I stand by it and welcome anyone's input into its continued development - like I said, it's open source. Admittedly, I am a self-taught php "programmer" - however, I saw a need for a particular product and filled that need for my own uses initially. I've put literally 1000s of hours into the continued development and happily dove into helping the AHA, modifying it to fit their needs.

It's true that the events of the 26th necessitate some serious consideration and remediation. Believe me, I've been in constant contact with the folks at the AHA since 1:05 PM on Tuesday. They are working long hours at 110% to make things right, analyze what went wrong, and figure our what to do about.

At least this "random guy in Colorado" did something about helping the homebrewing community in a way he feels reasonably competent instead of complaining about it in some forum.

That's all I am going to say about the subject.

Thanks,

Geoff

Here's a link to the Rock Hoppers Brew Club By-Laws.

We haven't incorporated as yet, but the by-laws were put into place early last year just in case.

Homebrew Clubs / Re: What Denver area clubs are fairly active?
« on: June 19, 2012, 10:47:31 AM »
Our club, the Rock Hoppers, is very active in the Colorado homebrewing community. Our website is constantly updated and we meet consistently the second Thursday of every month in the Castle Rock/Parker area.

We've got a rotating contingent of members who attend NHC every year... we participate in Club Night and the Hospitality Suite, serving our members' beer to the masses (we even had a write up from a beer blogger that became a fan of our brews in Minnesota).

We host a competition in early December (Biere de Rock) and a golf tournament in August (Hop on the Green).

Other activities include:
  • Hopper Happy Hours the third Thursday of every month at various Denver area beer bars and breweries
  • Brew With Me! events
  • Big Brew Day in May
  • Brewers Rendezvous camping trip in July
  • Annual Hop-o-ween Party in October
  • Holiday beer exchange

Dues are $20 per year. That's cheap!!

General Homebrew Discussion / Re: Better Beer Scores-Craft Beer U
« on: May 29, 2012, 09:44:57 AM »
Timmy, I hope your experience was positive in taking the 12 week Better Beer Scores course. Please keep us posted here of your progress!

Some exiting news on our front especially relevant to this thread...

Due to the changes in the BJCP's testing methodologies, Better Beer Scores has been revised and re-launched - the  program is now comprised of three shorter (4-5 week) courses, each aligned with one of the three BJCP Exams (the BJCP Entrance Exam, the BJCP Tasting Exam, and the BJCP Written Proficiency Exam).

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask them here or PM me.
