I think the Weaze is wise to say he'll go back...maybe he'll get the full story on why the brewer kicked back such a mean-spirited response. Bad day? Bad past experience with homebrewers? Or maybe The Weaze looks like some past boyfriend that stomped on her heart? Who knows.

At least going back and having a few pints may give an answer...just be sure to share it with us when you get one! ;) ( Hey, some of us don't have lives and depend on the Forum for fun...not me, but maybe some of us  ;D)

Ugh, the mead exam.  I'm taking it in the morning and haven't studied at all.  No chance of passing, but I'm not backing out either.  I'll study tonight and maybe learn my lesson and start studying earlier next time.

Tom, I was stunned when I saw the depth of information that the exam covers...but I can see the need for a skilled mead judge to know as much of it as possible. I can only hope to score in the mid 60s.
As with the beer judge exam, solid knowledge comes from layers of built-up experience - in judging, brewing, and tasting. (At least for us mere mortals)

I expect when you read this you'll have taken the exam. Hope you have a drink in your hand.  :)

We've been working hard to increase the number of judges in the area. 

Same here, mostly through the efforts of one of our members ("christo" here on the AHA forum)
He now has us in mead classes to prep for taking the mead judge exam on Mead day in August...we've been doing a mead only comp for 13 years; interestingly, the entries for it have not "jumped" like folks have described for beer comps.

These guys claim this o-ring will help with sealing older kegs.
May be worth trying.

Also, Williams Brewing has a similar product. Read the descriptions for both; they use nearly the same information, but Kegworks is cheaper. (Of course shipping may be different for both, so price may equal out in the end; just do your due-diligence when shopping)

Isn't the Guinness sold in the US a different recipe, or is that an urban legend? I know the alcohol content is different, but I guess they could just dilute.

IIRC, there are 17 or 19 identifiable recipe variations, many related to brewing outside of Ireland - namely in tropic climates.
It seems like I read that the US/Ireland recipes are nearly the same, but the brews are conditioned differently.

Anyone else got anything?

Terrible weather clouds, all sun, mid to high 60's...aka golf weather while stuck at work.   ???

And the damn flowering pear has started blooming; as a homebrewer, it galls me that someone would plant a "fruit tree" that bears no usable fruit! (just tiny pear-like fruits that the dogs eat till they start foaming at the mouth, so must be really tannic!)

I should cut it down...but then I never really wanted to be a lumberjack........

Aren't flies in your sparge generally undesirable? ;D

Well, it's pre-boil, so no worries...unless it's a pop fly, then you'll get a big splash, and may get scalded.  ???

John I understand the concept of descriptive vocabulary completely and I want to do justice to the brewer who paid to enter their beer.  I found out during the BJCP test that its easier said than done.  I may make myself a list of precise descriptors for each category, just as a crutch.

Well then you're way ahead of most first timers! So that means no worries, you'll do far better than average.

I made a list of descriptors for help describe color, clarity, head appearance, and helped just to go through the process of thinking up the terms, let alone writing them down.

And Tom, you're just the sort of judge I'd want to have judging my beers.

Be as descriptive as you's far better than just saying things like "nice head" or "good aroma" or "I like the flavor."
What is it about the head that looks nice? is it Frothy? Dense? Mousse-like? What about the aroma? Is the aroma hoppy? Malty? Caramel-like?
What flavors do you perceive...malt? hops? roast? wheat?

Having said that, I feel that the hardest part of judging is finding the right descriptive language to describe what you perceive, so don't feel awful if you have a case of writer's block.
Developing a good "judges vocabulary" will take time and experience...and will always be a work in progress.

Oh, and don't be too serious about it, it should be a fun thing to do...not something like a trip to the dentist! (no offense to any dentist's on the forum!) ;D

More good stuff.  I might just look like I know what I'm doing.

How many beers are typically judged in a session and how long do you expect we'll have per beer?  They said they have more entries than last year, but they've enlisted more judges.

Never more than 12 beers to a flight...typical might be 10. A good pace is to do one entry in ten minutes. Or at least in my experience...
