Beer Recipes / help with recipe
« on: January 30, 2015, 04:48:24 PM »
I have a question- I bought the grain bill for the following recipe but failed to have the grains separated. Will this not turn out if I mash the Carafa2 specail with the other grains? I didn't have the grains milled but It would take a considerable amount of time to pick thru all the grains to separate out the carafa. LEt em know your thoughts. Recipe follows.

ROSE CITY BLACK IPA

BEER RECIPE

Recipe Name:    Rose City Black IPA
Style:    Black IPA
Mash:   All-Grain
Volume:    6 Gallons (.75 gallons absorbed by kettle hops, .25 gallons lost to trub/dry hops)
OG:    1.061
FG:    1.012
% Alc:    6.6% ABV
IBU:    68
SRM:    39

Description of this Beer
This is a perfect example of a black IPA. The malt backbone is pleasant, but falls prey to the hop aroma and flavor, which meld with the subtle roastiness to taste almost minty, oreo-like, and decidedly more herbal than it would be without the Carafa.

Yeast and Fermentation / flavors from pitching to warm
« on: January 30, 2015, 12:02:29 AM »
I have gotten an off flavor that hasn't been consistent in my house ale. I suspect its from possibly rushing and pitching when the wort is too warm. Can some of you describe what these flavors might be so i can nail this down? Still learning and having fun doing it!!!

Thanks,

« on: January 21, 2015, 11:06:54 PM »
Im doing a ipa and started my dry hopping at day 10. 9 day dry hop regime. Wondering how long I can leave the beer on the yeast cake before I need to worry about off flavors from the yeast.
Thanks,

Equipment and Software / up-size regulator on propane burner
« on: January 15, 2015, 12:29:10 PM »
Im thinking of trying larger 10 gal batches of beer. I have the dark star burner from northern brewer and was wondering if its possible to just swap out the regulator to a 10 psi to get more output from this burner?
Thanks,

Equipment and Software / Dark star burner return
« on: January 12, 2015, 11:36:35 PM »
I just wanted to give northern brewer a nod to the excellent customer service i received today. I bought this burner last may and have noticed a lot of soot on the bottom of my pot. I knew it wasn't right but it works and is rather efficient but decided to email northern and share this with them. Not only did they respond to my email within 15 minutes but also admitted they had some issues with some of those burners and verified my info and told me the replacement should be at my doorstep on Wednesday. That is excellent customer service and service like that goes a long way in my book.

Equipment and Software / keggle
« on: January 11, 2015, 10:36:14 PM »
I brew via biab and battle heat loss when mashing with my alum kettle. I am wondering am i better off going to a keg conversion or just build a mash tun? Would stainless hold the heat better?

Other Fermentables / ph readings
« on: December 11, 2014, 05:20:40 PM »
How many of you take PH readings when making mead? I have only made 3 batches so far but would like to make more and advance my recipes. What is the preferred method test strips or an electric meter?

Equipment and Software / scorched alum pot
« on: December 04, 2014, 08:09:44 PM »
My burner leaves the bottom of my pot black every time i brew. It the dark star burner northern brewer sells.
I mess with the venturi device but the flame doesn't seem to change at all. Is this the result of a cheap burner or will this happen with any burner? Anything I can do to prevent this? Thanks,

Just wondering where all of you are purchasing your honey online. So far my best (and only) purchase has been thru dutch gold. Im just wondering if anyone here has found a better online retailer or have you seen any holiday specials? Im always looking for some house stash to make the next batch.

Equipment and Software / 6.5 gal widemouth glass carboy on craigslist
« on: November 14, 2014, 01:41:49 PM »
I have made a deal with a guy on craigslist for two wide mouth 6.5 gal glass fermenters (20 bucks ea). I realized this morning looking at the add that they have purple (ish) lids. He said they were new but has anyone seen these being sold with purple lids? I only see white lids. Just wondering where these are from? Anyone have any reviews on these seems like a good idea to me from a cleaning standpoint. Link

Yeast and Fermentation / odd fermintation
« on: November 09, 2014, 02:51:35 PM »
Brewed a batch yesterday of an ale. I wanted to pitch on top of a partial slurry left from my last batch (same beer) because it was a limited release wyeast west coast ale. I split the slurry canned 1/2 and repitched the rest. 6 hours after pitching a little action in the bubbler this morning i go down and an 1-1/2" of foam from the yeast could be seen all the way around the sides from fermintation last night but the bubbler is not active at all. Im not used to seeing anything like this. I forgot to take an og but this is my house beer so i know where it started out at (1.050 +/-). Should i consider primary done? Thanks
