Equipment and Software / Bayou Burner Tips

So the friendly neighborhood UPS guy just dropped off my new Bayou Classic SP-10.  I was like a kid on Christmas morning when I opened the box.  However after taking a look at the beast and reading through the manual I must admit I'm a little intimidated, having never used a stand-alone burner this big before. 

The assembly was straight-forward:  Screw the hose barb into the burner and tighten.

Any tips for using it to help me prevent myself from either frying my face off or blowing up/burning down my house and the surrounding countryside?  My main concern after reading the manual was the use of it in my garage.  The manual explicitly said not to do that.  I'll be using it outside in the open air when possible but was hoping to be able to use it in my garage when necessary (with both doors wide open of course). 

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Ingredients / FWH in an ESB

I posed the question in nicneufeld's thread but it was kinda a hijack (sorry) and I'm interested in everyone's input both on the subject of FWH and my specific question, so:

Slightly off topic but what do you guys think about using EKG as FWH in an ESB instead of the normal aroma addition?

The only response so far was:


I wouldn't do it, though that's just me as I really don't like FWHing.

but in any case, FWH is a bittering/flavor hop charge, not an aroma - in fact, you get very little, if any aroma from them, so it would definitely not be a good sub.

And thanks Blatz for the reply.  Just curious if anyone else has any experience to add.

Equipment and Software / Thermoplastic tubing for mash tun?

Is it a good idea to use thermoplastic tubing for draining wort from the mash tun or is the ordinary plastic tubing just fine?  I've used the regular stuff in the past but as I'm putting my cooler back together I got to thinking that the liquid coming out of there is probably above the recommended temperature ranges for the stuff.

General Homebrew Discussion / NB Crush

How's the standard crush if you order crushed grains from Northern Brewer?  I'm just getting back into the game and the cost of my equipment wish list is a little higher than I'm willing to spend at the moment.  So I'm thinking of just grabbing the essentials and leaving a mill for a little bit later date.   I used to have a Corona mill but it's gone now.  RIP.
