As long as it doesn't freeze you should be fine.

My best man pulls the pour restrictor and throws the cap away anytime we open a bottle of  ta-killyah

That used to be the signature saying of one of the guys I went to school with.  He'd go out and buy a handle of cheap vodka or rum, like Banker's Club (shudder) and say, "First thing you do when you open the bottle...throw the cap away."

From the Vermont barter network website:

http://vtbarter.com/faq/

Quote
Barter dollars are treated exactly the same as cash for tax purposes...

I'd say it's a pretty safe bet to conclude from that statement that bartering your beer is illegal.

+1 to Weazletoe.  If you're one of those trainers you have to know you're playing with fire.  Or in this case playing with a 7000 pound killing machine.  If the machine does what it's designed to do you really can't blame it.  I don't think this whale is any more likely to kill someone than he was before.  He's not a "premeditated killer".  He's a whale that eats stuff smaller than him in the food chain.  Or more likely, a whale that plays with what it feels are toys.

Perhaps we shouldn't be using these animals as spectacles but I don't care to get on a high horse about that.  If we do use them as such then we need to accept the possibility that they will act in accordance with their nature, and we shouldn't punish them for that.

I think you don't have anything to worry about unless it's been sitting there for a long time.  But I have no practical experience since I've never let a bottle sit around unfinished that long  ;D

My dad occasionally buys a bottle of scotch since he knows I like it when I'm planning on visiting.  If I let half a bottle sit there it's still good when I get back home the next time and it's usually six months or so between visits.  Unless my sister drinks it in the meantime.  So I wouldn't think you had much to worry about unless you were sippin on the same bottle for a year or two.

Sounds like you got a bunch of stuff you otherwise wouldn't have shelled out for.  Good for you.  And congrats.

I am getting up to 13 gallon batches anymore. I have been taking a few gallons and boiling on the kitchen stove, then adding when there is room in the kettle. I really need to start kegging, I have 44 gallons ready to bottle now, not to mention wine :P

What, you don't have 500 bottles lying around?

My father in law has some good ones.  My personal favorite is:

"I'm busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest."

He has also has a couple more vulgar versions of that one.

This whale can never be released, sad to say, he is likely to repeat his behaviour in the wild.  jmo....

Well, at least in the wild he wouldn't have a tasty human snack standing on his nose as he performs acrobatic maneuvers for several hours a day.  This is a six ton predator with a mouthful of very big teeth.  If you play around with them long enough something bad might just happen.

Usually 5.5 gallon batches.  That's about the max my system can handle since I only have a ten gallon kettle.  No real desire to brew bigger batches at the moment either since it's mostly just me drinking it and I like to brew as frequently as I can and keep the pipeline full.

Zymurgy / Re: Zymurgy Magazine?
« on: February 25, 2010, 11:37:45 AM »

That's what external hard drives are for.  Or you could back them up and burn them to a DVD as well.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but what's to stop the unethical person from illegal distrobution if you could save them and distribute to friends, who then don't feel like they have to sign up for the AHA?

Personally I think that I get a lot more value from other aspects of being a memeber, but it is a great little perk!

I completely agree.  There's nothing to stop it.  If that's all a significant portion of the membership feels they're getting from the AHA then it wouldn't be a good idea.

...or has their hardrive crash... a hardcopy at least you can read 10 years later.  Just something to chew on...

That's what external hard drives are for.  Or you could back them up and burn them to a DVD as well.  I do like having the paper copy but for archiving purposes it would be really nice to have a soft copy as well.

I think what Drew said above hits the mark.  If people feel that the magazine is the primary value they're getting from the AHA then taking it digital will hurt badly.  If there's enough additional value over just Zymurgy then it's not that big of a deal.

That would be absolutely awesome.  I hate paper.  I'm not even sure where my last issue is at the moment.  I could ask my wife where she put it but it would be a lot easier to go click on my Zymurgy folder and just pull it up.

I don't know about that.  I don't take a laptop to the "office" in the morning, it's a lot easier sitting on the throne with the paper version. :)

Well, that's a good point as well.
