The Pub / Some facts to ponder.....
« on: May 06, 2011, 02:59:17 PM »
May be a hair out of date but still funny....

If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you
would have $49.00 today.

If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you would have
$33.00 today.

If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you
would have $0.00 today.

But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the
beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund, you would have
received a $214.00.

Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily &
recycle. It is called the 401-Keg.

A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found that Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol
a year. That means that, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the
gallon!

The Pub / What are the odds?

I have a 2.5" receiver on the back of my D-max.... there's a 2" insert. I use a locking hitch pin.... a pin, a lock and a plastic cover. The other day I was coming out of the store and discovered the scene below on my back bumper...... after driving 8 miles...Apparently I had forgotten to put the pin back in after I removed one of the hitches....

The Pub / Fish
« on: April 28, 2011, 01:41:16 PM »
As in the former front man of Merillion.

Yesterday I was in being or not to being in Stratford upon Avon, and after having enjoyed some real ale and good food at the Dirty Duck I was strolling back to my hotel and passing Cox's Yard read on the sandwich board that Fish would be performing that night....

Excuse the frock outa me?

Lo and behold, the man himself with an acoustic guitarist and keyboard player. Apparently the show was sold out, and there were a bunch of peeps with tickets from the December show which blizzarded out, but 17 quid got me a ticket from a bloke in the bar....

So there I was, three feet from the stage, 10 feet from the man, and when he yelled "are there any requests?" and I yelled "ZOE 25" he sang the damn song....

Now, if you understand what all the above means, you know this was one of those moments for me....... life is good.

General Homebrew Discussion / Damn I'm good......

DUCK!!!!!!

OK, all kidding aside....  Made an American Brown Ale, and am very impressed with how that came out. I mean, I drink a lot of Guinness in the UK and Ireland, so my palate is spoiled, (not developed, lol) but this is "hic" DAMN TASTY. Oh, seems it came out at a healthy 6.5+% ABV.... the upper edge of the style. Then again, I have no style...... ;D

OK, back to your regular scheduled programming.

General Homebrew Discussion / Odd flavor.....
« on: April 13, 2011, 05:37:42 PM »
Brewed my usual IPA..... same ol' recipe. One keg just fine. The other, I put an ounce of Cascadian whole hops in a bag in the keg.... Every time I take a swig I think......dishwashing liquid.  Two possibilities. 1: I used some to clean the keg and didn't get it all out.... (can't remember) 2 The dry hop.

Any thoughts?

Yeast and Fermentation / Doctor I have this friend.....
« on: April 12, 2011, 05:18:29 PM »
No really....

He brewed a Czech Pilsner, extract style. I wasn't here for this. Two weeks later there is a layer of white "stuff" with green spots on top of the beer in his bucket...... Me, I'm not optimistic about this....

Any thoughts?

Kegging and Bottling / AAARGH!
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:06:31 PM »
Everything was perfect.....and then something happened. Not sure what, too many things changed at the same time. Put a keg on the system, which was carbonated at 55º/18PSI (separate bottle/regulator)..... Also tweaked the serving pressure up a hair......

Anyway, the whole system went nuts..... foam city. All four kegs. Got them all disconnected and trying to calm them down. Lots of test pouring.....HIC!.....

I don't trust these regulators......

Never a dull moment in this business......

General Homebrew Discussion / Beer popsicles anyone?
« on: April 02, 2011, 06:52:00 AM »
OK, found a new way to screw up.

Probe fell out of the fermenteezer. Beer was cold crashing at 34.... But garage at 45, so thermostat said run.... run....run....it's 11ºF in there.......

Beer now solid....... :o Going to let it thaw out and then pretend nothing happened.

An Eis IPA.......maybe?

Any thoughts?

General Homebrew Discussion / Fermcap-S The good and the bad.
« on: April 01, 2011, 02:09:29 PM »
The good, NO BOILOVER..... full throttle to a rolling boil....turn it down and maintain. SWEET.

The Bad. Big ol' paint strainer hop bag sealed. As in hang it above the kettle and it takes 1/2 hour to drain. The two don't work together apparently. Unless there's another reason for that. Which there may be...... Against the rule of never changing more than one thing at a time I also hung the bag in there before boil (for FWH). But, this means there was a serious hot break inside the bag as well.....

I'm hoping I got proper hop utilization.... :-[ It tasted bitter enough so I am optimistic.

Thoughts?

Beer Travel / More Scotland.....
« on: March 28, 2011, 12:51:25 PM »
Off to Glasgow. Got a list off the CAMRA site, and duly mapped them. Time for a half pint hike.... 15 minute walk, find real ale, have a half pint, repeat until tired. Can't decide on Haggis or Bombay Blues...... I will report if I find anything exciting. Will definitely be looking for Scottish ale. I DO like Deuchards.
