I judged stouts at the MCAB this year,

So now I know who to blame for not medaling this year.

I only judged 1/2 of them, there was 2 sets of judges :o

General Homebrew Discussion / yeast for tropical foreign export stout
« on: March 14, 2010, 06:38:15 PM »
I judged stouts at the MCAB this year, and had my first good version of a tropical version of the Foreign Export stout. BCS lists London Ale as its yeast choice for this style, but the one I judged had a much nicer fruity ester profile than I remember the London strain having.

Any imput on yeast choice for this "sub" sub-style?

My best line came from an informal tasting In hosted a year or two ago when I won the NB forum Christmas beer pass. It was " your beer smells like oatmeal cookies,  but tastes like ass"

One thing I have noticed has not been mentioned in this thread yet, and it is no excuse for judges. Sometimes due to poor management of a competition judges have to judge two flights of above average alcohol content beers, and the comments on the second flight beers may suffer due to this.

I have had to judge both 16 a-e (Belgian and French ales), and India Pale Ale a-c on the same day, and when the 16 flight is dominated by big "E's" (Belgian specialty) and IPAs are mostly American and imperials the comments got a lot sloppier than I wanted them to. But then again so did my overall attitude ::)

You're no where near as old as you want to be. I did enjoy judging that flight with you the other day...all four of the beers ;D

I even learned someting about underfilled bottles

Yeast and Fermentation / Re: White Labs trial fermentation data

My experiences with White Labs have been helpful. They are willing to provide as much info. as they can. I've had phone conversations with their staff several times, some of which have been over a half hour each.
It took 1/2 an hour for them to convince you to read the tube where it says PITCHABLE IN 5 GALLONS OF WORT ;D

How disappointed I was that it was Chris Colby.

If I had to pick my least favorite beer style it would have to be the stout family...I like stouts, but not as much as other beer style families ;D

Hefewiezen here. SWMBO use to love them and I couldn't stand them, but then one day I found myself craving the banana esters and it has been down hill since then ::)
