General Homebrew Discussion / Brewing TV - Episode 38: None More Cask
« on: June 03, 2011, 05:20:25 AM »

Cask ale at home! Mike and Jake take what they learned about cask-conditioning ales from Damian McConn (Summit Brewing Co.) and use it to make their own cask version of an oatmeal stout. Join the guys as they learn the steps to a great firkinfied homebrew, swing some hammers, get jiggy with double espresso shots, and drink the finished cask ale with some work buddies. You'll find there's None More Cask.

Michael Dawson, NB Brand Manager and Brewing TV co-host wrote a great article about the relationship between homebrewing and craft beer in the Twin Cities Onion's Craft Beer Guide.

Fellow AHA members, we all know some great homebrewers out there.  And we also know that many of them are not members of the AHA.  Whether they've let their membership lapse, or they've never signed up, it's time for us to tell them why to join.

Michael Dawson from Northern Brewer (my co-host on Brewing TV and office-mate at Northern Brewer) finally pulled trigger on joining the AHA after being a homebrewer for 17 years!  Read his story as to why he waited so long, and how he finally saw the light:

http://northernbrewer.blogspot.com/2011/05/why-i-am-aha-member-and-you-should-be.html

It's an empowering call to become a member, and I encourage you all to pass it along, and/or take up the effort and spirit and get every last homebrewer signed up!

cheers

« on: May 06, 2011, 06:16:06 AM »

Cask ale is a segment of craft beer that is becoming more and more popular with beer-lovers in the United States. But many of us have no idea how it works. In this episode, Jake and Michael get put to work by Summit Brewing Company's Chief Firkin Hooligan Damian McConn. The guys help Damian finish, fine, dry-hop and fill firkins of his Unchained Series beer, Gold Sovereign. Come along with us for a behind-the-scenes look at how the pros get their cask on!

With wind chills way into negative territory and a four-foot snowbank at home, Brewing TV hits the road for some fun in the sun. This episode finds Jake, Mike & Chip in the Bay Area of California on a whirlwind tour of some of their homie Jon Weber's favorite craft beer spots. Jon is the blogger/photographer behind Beer Obsessed and he knows his way around the Bay Area beer scene with stops in Marin County, Berkeley, and Oakland. After all that beer in one day, we kick back for a homebrew session with the always brewtal Nathan Smith as you drops mad hop bombs on his own North Oakland Double IPA and some dry-hopping projects. Get out your sunglasses and hit the road with Brewing TV!

One beer done two ways. Dawson brews a side-by-side comparison of partial mash vs all-grain. The lucky beer - Northern Brewer's new Surly Bender beer kit, part of the new Pro Series line of beer kits. See how the intermediate brewing method of partial mash (more accurately "mini-mash") benefits the flavor of your beer without adding hours to the equation. Then sit in on a taste test of both homebrews up against the real thing.

In November 2010, homebrew guru Jamil Zainasheff broke the news to Brewing TV: he was embarking on the journey of opening a commercial brewery called Heretic Brewing Company in the East Bay area of California. Three months later, the brewery is nearly ready to produce beer. Join Brewing TV as we tour the partner brewery that Heretic shares with E.J. Phair Brewing Company. And we get in on a preview tasting panel for some of Jamil's possible recipes for Heretic. No ordinary beer here!

General Homebrew Discussion / Brewing TV - Epiosde 28: Back to Basics
« on: January 14, 2011, 09:43:05 AM »

We begin 2011 by getting back to the basics - stovetop extract brewing. There ain't no shame in our game! And because Jake is completely out of homebrewed goodness at his house, the boys are making two beers at once. Jake is brewing a German Alt. Dawson has something special up his sleeve - a session-fied Cascadian Dark Ale. Three dudes. Two burners. One heck of a time looking at ways to get the most out of your extract brewing experience

General Homebrew Discussion / Brewing TV: Episode 26 - Big Beer Brewing
« on: December 17, 2010, 07:06:54 AM »

Brewing TV embraces December's sub-freezing temperatures. In this episode, Dawson and Chip (and the brew dogs) brave the cold for an outdoor parti-gyle brew session. The fruits of their labor - a big ol' American barleywine, a smaller beer Dawson calls an American bitter, and lots of fun. Put on your puffy coat and gloves, grab a pint and think BIG! Dawson has a lot of tricks up his sleeve for this one.

Guest hosts Michael Agnew (A Perfect Pint) and Mark Roberts take us inside the magical process of making sahti. This traditional Finnish beer is generally prepared unhopped, unboiled and filtered through a bed of juniper branches, twigs and berries. Dawson once described it as "drinking Christmas in a glass." Join us for this special brew session.
